Carb Help - 1980 LG61

Hi - new to me LG61. Overall great shape but major hesitation while accelerating, even stalling at times. Mechanic says its a carburetor issue. Based on searches this forum / etc I ordered this carb repair kit off Ebay - Hitachi VHA B42

Unfortunately, mechanic says it is not the right kit. So now I need to find out what carb I have. Looking at manual, it says this P40 engine should have Carb model DAF342-51. Not sure if that is Hitachi or not? Mechanic can't find any part number on the carb. I'll attach some pictures and would love if anyone could help ID this carb, and provide any recommendations on getting my hands on a rebuild kit, or a replacement.

Looks like a later Datsun carb, like on a '68 to '73 510 1500cc engine. I messed with 510s a bunch in my teenage years, but the closest I got to the original carbs was unbolting and throwing them in a corner, and bolting on a Weber carb.

I looks like yours is a manual choke, so it could be in the earlier years of the 510s. Also could be a pickup carb from similar years 1600cc engine.

Since you're so good at posting pictures, could you get some side views of the carb? and any markings like name or numbers. That can help narrow it down.

That carburetor is unique to the P40 engine, from 1980 to 1984.

I will try to get the part number later on. But by the look of the base, it’s definitely being tampered too many times. Probably better to install a new one, like a Weber, as suggested by RiverPatrol.

The carburetor model # for the Patrol with P40 engine is Hitachi DAF342-52 (taken from a Service Manual)

For Patrols equipped with the L28 engine is Hitachi DAF342-44 (The L28 engine was used in the 280Z but that model has fuel injection) I don't know of any other application here in the US with that engine

Both carburetors have a Primary ventury of 26 mm, and a Secondary of 32 mm. Maybe this info can be used to find a Webber carburetor. That will probably be the safest and more reliable pad.

Some forklift were fitted with the P40 engine, and from a Komatsu parts catalog I have the part # as 16010-L6202. Searching with this, some outrageous prices come, most probably a mistake.

A possibility will be to try to find a Toyota FJ40 carburetor and see if it fits. It is also a 2-barrel.

Strange to me that someone would have put a Datsun carb from ~1970 on a 1980 Patrol...
Not so easy for me to get more pics - the car is with my mechanic who is slammed right now. He said he could not find any part numbers.
It is a manual choke.
The Landcruiser carb option is enticing based on the price-point on Amazon. Has anyone tried that, or know of someone that has tried it?

Strange to me that someone would have put a Datsun carb from ~1970 on a 1980 Patrol...

The LG61 Patrol came with the P40 engine, that's slightly different than the P engine on older Patrols. One big difference is the intake manifold and the exhaust. So the Hitachi carburetor fitted on yours is probably the original one.

My guess about the Land Cruiser carburetor was thinking that the base might fit, and the engine displacement is similar.

Found the following info regarding a Webber 2-barrel 38mm for the Toyota Land Cruisers from 75 to 87. Maybe you'll get some ideas.

Well, I see that I totally missed the fact that you said this was a 1980 model!! I'm only familiar with the Hitachi VC42 and Rochester carbs used on the earlier Patrols.

I tried the Landcruiser Carb but unfortunately no luck. Mechanic said that it has an air jet that will be blocked off by the Patrol's intake manifold.

I reached out to Redline Weber re: Carb options. They passed me off to Pierce Manifolds. Called them and they said they couldn't do anything for '80 Patrol / P40 Engine.

If anyone has information on what Weber carbs they've used with this engine, that would be very helpful.... I can't afford to be buying a bunch of different carburetors to see what might work ; ). Also, any leads on how I could find an original / rebuilt carb would very much appreciated - I have checked many websites and Ebay without luck.
