60Patrol

After installing the new rear end, the patrol ran great. However, after starting it up to drive home from errands one day, it began to misfire and lose power. I managed to limp it back home. Upon inspection, we found it wasn't getting a spark, even though the coil had power and the spark plugs and wires were recently replaced. This pointed to the distributor. We adjusted the points, and it ran briefly before reverting to the original issue. This was about a year ago. Now, it doesn't run at all. I've tried adjusting the points again, but with no success. Any ideas? Could a new distributor solve the problem? I found a post about using a forklift distributor. Does the whole unit fit, or just the cap? I've checked each spark plug, wire, and the inside of the cap; there's no corrosion.

Have you checked the condenser?

Regarding the forklift distributor, it's a completely different unit, so it must be installed as a whole. You'll have to work with the different position that the distributor will have on the base that it sits on, in order to have the correct timing. It will require shifting the driving gear that's inside one notch.

There's another member here, ctcruiser that recently installed the forklift distributor and had to tweak the timing by shifting the driving gear. Hope he can chime in.

You could install a Pertronix electronic ignition kit and eliminate the points and condenser yet retain your water protect distributor. I just installed the Pertronix on one of mine this week, it runs great.

Appreciate the advice from you both of you, I'm think of headed towards the electronic ignition kit. From the very little research I've done so far it seems like a quick fix. I checked the website, I'm assuming the kit part number 1168LS is the right one. Thought I would double check. Do you know if there coils fit as well? If I'm getting the kit I may as well get a coil just for preventive maintenance.

If your distributor is the water protect then you want the Pertronix 1763LS kit. You don't need to get the high voltage coil, Pertronix actually recommends against that. https://www.60patrol.com/forum/viewtopi ... oil#p52358

Ok, so according to the chart I should get the 3 ohms 40,000 volt 40511 coil? or the 1.5, because I was looking at someone else's post and someone linked the 1.5.

Then for ignition kits the 1168LS is for non water protected and 1763Ls for water protected distributors. Right? Where does the 1761 kit fit in to all of this cause I saw it linked on another forum post as well. Also how can you tell the difference between the water protected vs non water protected distributors.

I would go with the 3 ohm coil.

The 1761 kit I think was the number they used early on and was later superseded to 1763.

The water protect distributor has the cap that is held on with 3 screws as opposed to clips that the non-water protect uses.

The Pertronix 1761 is for the non-water protect distributors from ~1972 and later. The Datsun 240Z also uses the same one.

All US Patrols were fitted with the water protect distributors.

I reused the old coil. Although I wasn't trying to correct a running issue.
