Batteries that fit

Howdy All,

It looks like the battery from an old Honda is 1) too old and 2) too small for the ol' Patrol -- What size battery goes in the Patrol (under seat)? I'd like to maximize the battery space. Also, side post or top post?

Definitely top post. I don't recall the measurements offhand, but I think one was 8". 800 cranking amps is what I usually get.

Time to revisit this topic again.
In July 2012, I installed a Group 24 battery in the under-seat compartment.

Installation required positioning the battery on its side to pass thru the opening. This battery, like may others on the market has a built in placement strap to facilitate carrying. The battery has loops on the length end to accept the strap. These loops increase the overall length of the battery, making it too long to pass thru the precut hole under the seat. (Without the strap, it would be very difficult to remove the battery.)

Therefore, what group size battery fits without modification to the under-seat compartment or battery case?

I think mine is a group 25. I used a wood spacer on one side and ended up adding a couple new holes for the battery hold-down clamp.

Looks like a good fit. Will keep that reference handy.

For the time that I remember, I've always removed the whole cover under the seat to install the battery. I've never done through the inspection cover. Later model Patrols, maybe beginning in 73 have a bigger opening that allows comfortable placement through it.

The PO relocated mine to the engine compartment, I wish it was still under the seat. I'd like to return it to it's correct spot, but wouldn't even know how the cables should be routed.

If memory serves, ours goes from the battery compartment up the driver side frame rail, then crosses on the back of the transmission cross member (there are some bend-over tabs that hold the cable in place, then up the outside of the passenger side frame rail to the starter... Better, pop across Folsom Lake (I bet the water is low enough that your Patrol can make the crossing!) and see for yourself!

John, this would have been the perfect weekend for me to come over if I hadn't injured myself on Thursday! I'm on couch duty for 3 days with my leg elevated. I know you're getting a new fun work area tomorrow, hope you get some sleep tonight with all the excitement!!
