marks 4wd 5spd for the 60 series Patrol, it is possible!

An Aussie guy who owns a 69 G60H has done us all a big favor. He has spoken to Marks 4wd and reports this info.   Hi Spoke to Mark of Marks 4wd on friday night and told him of the interest there was in a 5 speed for the g60 in the statesHe said that he still was able to make the 5 speed but he said there was a great deal of work in them and they wouldnt be cheap, but as to a final price he didnt know.It was about 2300 oz dollars when you could get them so who knows.He didnt believe me I think on the amount of people after one and said that he would do a run of 10 min.I also mentioned the lack of response to you guys trying to reach him  and he seemed to not know of this at all. So as you can see Marks 4wd will do a run of the 5spd's. But a minimum of 10 boxs will have to be produced. That means we need 10 people who want to upgrade to the Marks 4wd 5spd and have cash to spend on this. The box is going to run $2k-3k so not real cheap but they will be new! I don't have the cash for more than one box myself so there is no way I can fund this venture on my own. If you don't know the Marks 4wd 5spd is the best tranny you can get for an old Patrol and will be the best tranny you can ever get for it. The tranny bolts right up to the stock engine and uses the stock transfer case. Bolt it in and go with a crawler 1st and an overdrive 5th. This is the biggest improvement you can make to an old Patrol.   I am number 1 so how many others are interested in this!?

Fud- I appreciatethe efforts you've done to bring parts to the Patrol community-I think if we could get some of the Marks 5 speeds it would be a huge step, I wouldnt hesitate to drop 2-3K into the tranny in a good Patrol as it would transform the patrol into a much more driver friendly vehicle. The tranny is by far the weakest link in the Patrol, and I think that turned alot of prospective customers towards Jeeps, Scouts and Rovers as they all had available 4 speeds by 1965, where the Patrol stuck with the indestructable but crude 3 speed without 1st gear synchro. I truly hope that enough people step forward and make the investment for the Marks, I personnally think it will double the price of an average Patrol, good luck, if this opertunity comes around next summer I'll buy it in a heartbeat-Duane

I purchased my 66 Patrol months back and have spent those months trying to figure out a way to make it crawl AND go over 50 mph. I thought there were no easy fixes out there till I saw this thread. Sounds ideal for what I need. I love my Patrol but can't stand that 3 speed tranny.   Before I can say "Yes, I'll take one" I need to know a ballpark price. I hope it isn't one of those 'If you have to ask, you can't afford it' stories. I'm just afraid if we all say yes to 2-3k dollars, before a price is nailed down, that the price will be on the high-end of the price curve. 2500 aus dollars was about 1250 US dollars back when. I know it isn't going to be $1250 , you can't make it for that nowadays. Just need a more solid price.   Also, can anyone post what the gear ratios will be, 1st through 5th? 5th gear...makes me druel just typing it. =)   Adam Foster

I think there is a fair share of us who feel the same way you do....love our Patrols, hate the 3spd.   I dunno what it will cost, bottem line is a 10 tranny run though. I am not out to make any cash on this, only get myself a Marks 4wd 5spd. And I will be paying the same as the other 9 people if it happens. I was thinking it will be $2-3k usd not aussie dollars. That is to get it home and ready to bolt in, shipping in the price. And this is a guess, it could run $1500. The guy who brought this to me, Rob, said the tranny was $2300 in Aus when you could buy them years ago. But I also heard the USA guy who bought one years ago through Advanced Adaptors paid $4k!!   There is a topic on my forum about this that is a sticky, meaning it will remain and be on top untill I remove it. This would be the best place for people to post about wanting the 5spd. I don't really want to contact Marks 4wd to get an exact price until I have a good feeling we can get 10 people together for the run of boxes. I like my 65 so much I don't even mind the 3spd gearbox. However I may be interested as it would make the patrol even better. I would need to know information about things like what clutch, pressure plate and thow out bearing does it use and where do you go to get them? Can they be had at a local auto parts by asking for another vehicle? Also what is done to "Make them up"? thank you, Mark

G'day,I am looking for offers on my Marks 5 speed box.I have 5 1978 G60 MWB's which I have collected over the last couple of years as I fell in love with the MWB, and was looking at doing a full restore to one vehicle. The last one I aquired I paid top dollar for because it had a good Marks 5 speed in it.Sadly for family reasons beyound my control I have to give up my dream. I know I can sell the whole vehicle over here on the road... but I also know that alot of you Yanks are chasing a 5 speed... so I thought I'd give you an option to buy it.OK... I can't tell you how many k's it has done because the guy I bought it off didn't tell me... but it's done about 3500km since I bought it... all he said was that it was fairly new... whatever that means... anyway I just wanted it so I bought it.It does look to be in great condition and has absolutely no probs in any gear... they all work beautifully. Anyway I thought I'd let you all know about it and tell me of your interest.I will leave this message here for a few weeks and see what interest there is. What you need to think about is how much you will pay for it and then take into account the shipping as well... also since I have heaps of parts I am willing to throw in a good working secondhand stock tansfer case if anyone needs it (obviously this may add to shipping costs) also if there are some small lighter items that you need and I have them I will throw them in as it prob want change the cost of the shipping too much.So let me know what you're willing to pay for the 5speed box and lets just keep it in $US for the moment I'll work out what the exchange is. I wonder why you guys are creating that much fuss about a tranny that i doubt will ever be produced again.There is a tranny available in India which is used in an Nissan army truck that uses the same P40 motor and the same Transfer case as the Patrol/Jonga but a 4 speeder Tranny with a 7.13:1 1st gear.The Tranny is just 3 inches longer than Patrol/Jonga Gearbox and although a new Tranny would be hard to find but an Army Surplus in good condition(they are bullet-proof) would hardly cost you about $300 ,and adding in the airline tickets and the freight, it would still be cheaper.....

well the marks is always tempting  and a 4 speed would be nice  also, brutus  the problem we have in the us, is size of said trans since all usa patrols are swb there is already a big problem with added lenght of a marks and angles of drive lines they have the 4 speed in oz as well. its just if youre going to spend the time & money shipping, it might as well be a five speed and as far as i know the cabstar five speed donates all the spare guts you could ever need for a marks butt 300 plus freight has got my attention  are they still double right output dont want to get one and have to find a rear end as well thanks for the tip

Interesting that you bring up the Jonga. From what I've been able to find out; the Jonga is a 60 series Patrol in about every way. Nissan continued to manufacture them in India for the Indian military long after the 60 series Patrol had been retired. I think this is no longer happening anymore, though.   So with that kind of quasi-current production, you would think India would be a good source for all of our Patrol needs. But, I have not heard of anyone that has established a contact there and brought any parts in from there. With all of the outsourcing companies are doing there, you would think someone should have a contact.

if you are willing to spend $2-3K on a tranny why not spend it on a T18 or T19 and get the adapters made Parts for these transmisions are available here in the US I've been thinking about going this route I'll Let you know what turns up or if somebody has done it let me know the sd33 engine cam with the T18 in the International Scout and the Patrol I believe
