Rear axle bearing

My problem is what holds the preload on the rear axle bearing. I've pressed the Bearing off and it looks fine. I've also reassembled it and torqued the nut and it still is loose. What keeps the bearing tight? What exactly is the order of assembly? There's a small shim tapered on the inside that I believe goes first then the bearing? I've assembled it without the shim it's too tight and the axle jams against the backing plate. The other axle I took out of my parts patrol didn't have this shim and also didn't rub the backing plate. I have a brand-new bearing but don't want to put it on and waste it since the original one looks fine. when I reassemble all of this in the order it came apart tighten everything down the axle still moves up and down in and out. Getting frustrated trying to figure this out. Does anyone have a picture of and I exploded view of the rear axle for some tips or thoughts? Any help would be greatly appreciated I'm ready to set this thing on fire.

This is an exploded view that might help you:

I can't recall the width of the spacer #25 pictured above, but it is wide enough to allow the grease seal #18 run over it. There's nothing else.

Parts #21 and #22 are attached to the flange of the axle, so probably nothing missing there. Only left is the #14 Cage.

I don't have any pictures of an actual dismantling or assembly.

I think I may have figured it out. The axles are held in preload by each other they butt up against each other in the middle of the diff. I found that the passenger-side nut is backed off and that one is working it's way out. Which caused the preload to come off of the left side and cause my grinding noise on the left. So the problem is actually the passenger side and not the driver, the driver just so happen to make noise.
