Back on Patrol

Hello, Great to be part of the 60 patrol forum. I've been using this amazing resource to get a couple patrols back up and running.

In high school(1995) I was big into jeeps, didn't even know Nissan Patrols existed. Went to a junk yard that was supposed to have some jeep parts and low and behold I spotted my first patrol. A rough but complete baby blue 1969 L60. I was hooked and went home with a patrol for $500 and no jeep parts. Rebuild the carburetor and I was off and running.

I took about a 30 year hiatus but acquired a couple more patrols along the way. The last couple months I've finally gotten back to them and have started with the gred 1969 and green 1967.

I've been able to get both of them running and just got the 1969 tagged yesterday. Brakes still need a bit of work but hope to be on the road soon.

On the 69 the process started with no spark and found everything rusted under the waterproof cap?? Cleaned it up and found a new set of points in the glovebox. This got it running but not very well. Tried rebuilding the Rochester carb but no improvement. I picked up a THUNDERMINGO Chinese copy of a Rochester carb on amazon and it runs great! Smokes a bit but at least it runs.

Filled the radiator, fired it up and rusty water comes pouring out the back of the water pump, backing plate completely rusted out. Had a piece of metal the right thickness so fabbed up a new plate on the bandsaw.

Mechanical fuel pump was blocked off and was using an electric. Thought it would be nice to have the mechanical back but didn't want to pay the $700 for the 17010-L6200 and seems the GOSS G635 version is not available. Typed Nissan H20 into amazon search and found 17010-50K00 for $40, took the gamble and seems to be working fine so far.

Onto the brakes and clutch. All master cylinders go to the floor when filled with brake fluid.

For the brake master cylinder, it moved freely so ball honed the bore and rebuilt it with a Raybestos MK234 rebuild kit. I had to lengthen the pushrod bore on the piston with a ball nose endmill so it would have the same depth as the original patrol. Seems to be working fine and the wheel cylinders arent leaking but brakes are still soft. I also added a tilton fluid reservoir.

The clutch slave cylinder was seized so I put it in the oven for an hour then into a bucket of water. Piston came out with a shot of air and was lucky to find it across the shop. Was able to use the piston from a 1969 Nissan 521 pickup. Should have used the clutch master cylinder from the 521 but used one for a 520 pickup. Clutch hose from a 240Z

With a litte more work on the brakes it should be ready for its maiden voyage.

Excellent progress! Congratulations!   You've done a lot, and specially are providing some solutions to difficult to get parts.

If possible, could you please post a picture of the fuel pump installed? This could be a game changer for many of us.

Thanks.

KansasPatrol,

Based on your success with the chinese Rochester I bought one to try it out. The well breaten 66 Santa's Sleigh needs a new carb so we will give it try as I cant find any VZ carbs.
Thanks,

Thanks Esteban, I’ll post a picture when I get back home from the weekend. With the Goss G635 working on the p series and also the H20 in the Nissan Urvan E23 I figured any pump listed for the H20 should work.

On both my patrols the fuel pump had been removed and blocked off so I couldn’t compare to the one I found on Amazon. Looking at the P series engine manual there is a great picture that made me think a 1948 GMC I6 fuel pump would work looking at the arm geometry. Bolts right up but must not have engaged the cam. If anyone has an original one I can send dimensions of the one I installed. Also I’m pretty sure we can swap fuel pump uppers, lowers and arms if they will fit. I did this on a Willy’s cj2A years ago

I was really surprised how many parts I’ve found on Amazon. Carb, fuel pump, starter, forklift distributor and brake and clutch rebuild parts. Found a starter cheaper on eBay though

Great job on everything! It looks like you're close to having the brakes fine tuned. Usually the final touch is getting the adjusted correctly. Here is a thread describing that: https://www.60patrol.com/forum/viewtopi ... 803#p54803

Thanks for the link RiverPatrol.

Hope the carb works out L60Boerne, It seems to get mixed reviews but worked great for me. I bought the one with the fuel outlet on the passenger side because it has the air filter stud. If you search Rochester 1BBL on amazon you will find a copy with the fuel inlet identical to the factory patrol but no air cleaner stud. It could be modified or an adapter fabbed but fuel line is cheap and easy.

Here are the pics of the fuel pump. Luckily the factory isolator was left on when blocked off so I reused it with the new fuel pump.

KansasPatrol,

I ordered the Thundermingo that fit your description exactly EXCEPT it did not say Jeep anywhere and it was more expensive. They must have been shipped the wrong carb as the one received had the fuel inlet on the wrong side. Hopefully they will take it back.

I have re-orderd the Thundermingo 700251 Rochester B suitable for 1950-1959 Chevy 235 ci pick up.

It arrives Tuesday. We will see.
