I have a 1975 Patrol which runs very well; however, the last 2 times I have
driven it -- after stopping it had issue restarting until I fiddled with
the distributor cap and ensured all wires were secured. The battery and
starter are both working. I am trying to diagnose and determine best
solution ...
I was thinking of installing a new distributor. If so, where do you
suggest I look? Or is it better to rebuild, same questions as to sourcing
parts.
Is there another avenue that I should be investigating?
Thanks!
Rich D

You might check the ignition coil.
Beyond any hope for intervention

Re: Help with Distributor diagnosis/replacement/repair
Nice and clean engine bay! Congratulations.
I will second RiverPatrol on the ignition coil. But with a points' ignition, the condenser and a cracked cap can play you tricks. Is the points gap correct?
You probably can start with troubleshooting it:
- Inspect the distributor cap for cracks or arcing traces, as well as the rotor.
- Try a different coil.
- New points and condenser.
Since you have the standard distributor, parts are easier to come by:
At this place, distributor cap, points and condenser:
https://store.hgmforkliftparts.com/niss ... E3001.aspx
Also use distributor parts for 1972 240Z (the distributor is the same).
If you need the complete distributor at $107:

If after solving the problem you think your distributor is in good shape, that is no lateral play of the axle, you can also go the route of installing the Pertronix electronic ignition kit, coupled with the corresponding 3 ohm coil. I've been running this kit for over 13 years:

Note: the above Pertronix is only for the non-water protect distributor, or the standard one fitted on Patrols that have come from overseas.
