Front Axle Drive Flange Adjustment Shim Source?

Post by r1lark »

Anyone know of a source for the front axle drive flange adjusting shims, part numbers 40240-44000, 40241-44000, and 40242-44000 ?

These shims I have never touch in over 50 years of ownership!!

Although important (they are probably there for a reason) if you plan to fit the locking hubs, it’s going to be a non-issue in my opinion. Parts involved are going to be without movement almost 99% of the time.

I’m not near my computer to check the calibration procedure, and it probably relates to the play of the drive axle. A little bit of extra tolerance due to lack of proper shim thickness won’t make a difference once you are with the locking hubs engaged.

I understand what you are saying Esteban, and true that most of the time the front axle will be freewheeling. (At least for me......for someone like David/L60Boerne, this wouldn't be the case :) ) But the engineer in me says I should strive to set this up as close to correct as I can reasonably accomplish. I have about 5 good shims (2 are the thickest ones) that came with the Warn lockout hubs I got from another member here on the forum. The shims that were on mine were in very poor shape -- actually in pieces.

I'm trying to get the stub shafts/hubs/brakes/wheels back together so I can move the Patrol off my Mom's carport down to its winter storage area, so was hoping to have a collection of shims to prevent delays.

Please take a couple of pictures when you're installing the shims to get a better idea of the calibration procedure. The manual is very cryptic and the quality of the scanned copy I have is terrible. Your pictures on the other hand, are so good and clear that it will help all of us when dealing with this task.

Esteban, basically what is done is to put a straightedge on the end of the spindle and determine how much further (if any) the spindle sticks out versus the face of the hub (where the drive flange bolts on). Then, you add shims until the end of the spindle is at least even with the face of the hub & shims.

I'll try to take some good pictures. :)

Not sure what I'll do if the small amount of shims I have are not enough to do this. Maybe some folks on here have some usable used ones...........
