G60 axle replacements

Post by Isaac.gossard »

Hello, I am a mechanic working on a 1978 g60 my client recently bought.
It’s from Columbia and has been rode hard. Parts being so hard to find and 50 other reasons make me want to install more common front and rear axles in the vehicle.
Has anyone done something like this before.
I would love to hear about it.

Depending on what you need parts are not really hard to find, you just have to be patient and sometimes creative. That being said I know some in the past have used Dana axles or even an FJ40 rear axle. Neither are a bolt on solution, they require modification. I never have been able to confirm if they will connect directly to the stock transfer and 4wd works, also if the stock hand brake set up is used. I know some just didn't have a handbrake.
Beyond any hope for intervention

Isaac,

I'm running on remanufactured 1977 Toyota FJ-40 axles which are more robust than the original and are compatible with various differential locker products (I've installed ARBs). I'll edit this post with a link to photos if you're interested.

P.S. - I just checked and there are detailed photos of the axle install in the album linked in my signature below.
