Any Replacement Pitman Arms?

Are there any replacement pitman arms that are of a "standard" type that use tie rod ends? I may have to either heavily modify the OEM drag link, or switch pitman arms and get an aftermarket drag link kit for my high steer setup.

Or....am I able to remove the ball stud from the pitman arm and use a normal tie rod end on it?

You'll have to grind the weld that holds the ball and its stem secured to the pitman. I've though about this a couple of times as a way to refresh the face of the ball, rotating it 90 degrees.

have you ever done it before? Do you by any chance know the diameter of the hole in the pitman arm when the ball is removed?

I have not. I’m going to check with my brother since he adapted a power steering system (a hydraulic piston that moves in and out in place of the steering linkage that you just modified). I think he either cut the pitman arm and welded the tip of another to receive the PS gizmo, or took out the ball and welded another.

Will try to find out.

My brother told me that he used another Patrol pitman, but doesn’t recall exactly what he did with the ball so he wasn’t able to measure it, although the pictures of his work shows somehow your idea. His power steering adaptation was done some 30 years ago!

so it seems like your brother combined 2 different pitman arms? was the 2nd pitman arm from a patrol as well, or some other vehicle?

He used an original Patrol pitman. His memory and mine are failing a little bit on the details, since it doesn't make sense to modify a new one instead of the older one that he has kept.

In any case, the hole inside the pitman is probably a straight on, and not beveled like a typical terminal. Again, I don't recall this, it's just a guess.

One way to tell the diameter could be done grinding two small sections on opposite sides of the welded portion, and hopefully be able to measure the stem of the ball.

He measured the outside diameter of the ball at 1.121". Most probably it is 1-1/8" (1.125") Again, my guess is that the stem of the ball is probably 5/8"
