Solution for Nissan Patrol starter

Hey guys

I think I might need to purchase a new starter for my '82 LG61. A replacement one goes for about $100, but I was doing some research on how similar the starter from the Datsun 240z is, looks almost identical. And it's only $25 on RockAuto

I just wanted to ask if anybody on the forum had ever had this work on a Patrol. It's a big savings for taking the old lady out to eat.

Very few members here have the 61 Series with the P40 engine. The starter on that one is different from the P engine on older Patrols.

I tried to search within the forum without success, since at a point one member ended up buying the P40 starter by mistake. It was so I could get the reference number. Many forklifts sold here in the States have the P40 engine, so it's easy to source, with the correct part number.

I have my doubts that the 240Z starter could work.

Maybe try to research whether the same starter motor is used on both the L28 and P40 motors in the MQ/MK 160 series Patrols ? If yes then it's a fair bet the Z starter would be a match...

I don't have a parts manual for the MQ or 61 Series with the P40 engine. Online you can only get info on the L28 engine, so part numbers will be difficult to match.

In the meantime, I checked the Rockauto website for an image of the 280Z starter and it's totally different from the one in the P40. I used to have one 160 Series (in Ecuador) and I recall that the starter was very similar to the P engine, but not interchangeable.

Hey guys, my suspicion was correct.

I went ahead and bit the bullet, and ordered a Datsun 240Z automatic transmission starter. It bolted right up and fit perfect in my G61 1982 Patrol. So if anybody in the future needs a starter for their G61 you can buy the one for the 240Z, but it has to be automatic trans.
