2018 Rocky MTN Patrol Rally?

Post by L60Boerne »

Greetings Patrollees Worldwide,

Would there be any interest in a summer 2018 Rally?

I'd be open to any city but I'd prefer somewhere with cool summer temperatures. I'll open up with Lake City, CO simply because within thirty minutes of downtown we can be above treeline on the Alpine Loop, though CO has twenty towns with the same opportunity.

If there is interest, then we must start planning now because hotel rooms in the smaller mountain towns are very limited.

Well...it looks like it's just us. Can we set up pistol shooting, whiskey drinking contest? My only worry is going to 13,000 up a 20% grade or so.

This going to be fun, I am well an expert in the events! Hopefully a few others with jump in before it warms up again. The goal is to have more than we can house but if not the cabin is open for the event.

Sounds very interesting. I suspect an event not to be missed!

Is it going to involve some 4WD adventures, or just a 'show and tell'?

I'm in Oz so I don't think I can bring my G60, but I might make it alone. I might need to borrow a G60Peter or passenger with someone. Mid summer (my mid winter) seems a good time for the event.

I'll wait for more detail.

Peter

Lake City is in the midst of some of the most beautiful scenery and the best off-roading in Colorado; the San Juan mountains. From Lake City you can be on a great trail in minutes and not see pavement for days if you so choose. Epic views and trails for ALL skill levels are there. Google Engineer Pass, Cinnamon Pass, Silverton, etc. All are part of the Alpine Loop. I am certain that there is not a single Off-Road club that hasn't made this area a venue at some time in the past.

It would be interesting to see how an old Patrol would do in this country. Check your jets and your brakes!!!

This sounds like a truly awesome opportunity. It's pretty centrally located for those of us in the states which is nice. It goes without saying that Colorado has some of the most beautiful scenery in the nation, best seen off road. In my better days I would be all over this trip.
Beyond any hope for intervention

Thank you for helping spread our enthusiasm! RiverPatrol is right again. The "Lake City Rally" will include many tests of man and vehicle! The Alpine Loop will driven by all Patrols that don't mind sheeting their shoes dirty. Yes, it will be in everyone's best interest to show up with fresh brakes and old bourbon.

Don't forget, we will finally have our first Big Bend Rally in February. After all this time and money there is no way these Patrols are staying in the warehouse.

Peter, if you come up from down under you will be our guest of honor and welcome to drive either of my Patrols all you want.

Now we just need some dates. The Alpine Loop unfortunantly is well known and well travelled by off road clubs. I am sure the best weather periods are the most travelled butI will do some checking to determine when we might have the least traffic conditions. Patrollees must be prepared for everything from snow to rain to skull bleaching sun with carbs set for high altitude.

Rally Seasons up for Vote

a). Pre-season Juneish - still ice and snow above treelike where Alpine Loop resides - temps 25-70 F

b). Season July-August - afternoon rains only issue - temps 40-80 F, 4th of July Parade is awesome slice of Americana

c). Fall Lull - Sept to Oct 20th - summer crowds are gone, trees start turning around Sept 15th and peak around Oct 5th - Alpine Loop still open but occasional light snows ...26-70 F

Here is the best news....every night is awesome for story telling around the firepit!
