Does anyone know where I can get a rear window rubber seal for the rear window of my 78 G60?

I was hoping it would be the same profile and size as the front windscreen, however while it has the same profile it is smaller.

There is a rubber supplier in Australia that has it available, and it isn't Scott's Old Rubber but I don't recall who it is. I was able to get one several years ago through a member over there.

After hours and hours searching the internet and contacting suppliers I finally think I have found a suitable rubber. It is in the mail. When it arrives and if it is correct I will post details.

I asked numerous suppliers if one of their rubbers for say a MQ would fit. Simple answer 'we don't have one for a G60'. I don't think they even knew the rubber profile!! A MQ rear window might fit, I have worked out the profile is the same but unsure of the length.

I am getting a single strip of rubber 4 m long. It is considered generic or universal. It isn't molded for corners or anything.

I'm now unsure of a couple of things.

Should I cut the rubber the same length as the window circumstance? I was thinking of cutting it a little short (1" / 25mm) so it would be a snug fit. I plan to superglue the ends together (as per another window post 'side window rubber install') and then stretch it onto the glass .

Should I use sealant or something in the grove where the glass fits? I read somewhere to use red rubber grease. What sealant should I use?

Should I use some sealant around the window frame (metal) and the rubber. I read somewhere to use 3M bedding Compound. What sealant should I use?

After removing the front and rear glass I know can see why there is rust in most windscreen frames/firewalls etc. The rubbers are really just a water holding device :(

You definitely don't want to cut it short. It will stretch a little when you are installing it, but it will shrink with age.

You don't need sealant against the glass. I've never seen slant used on the metal frame side, and I can imagine it would make quite a mess trying to get it there.

Clean up the existing rust and use a rust inhibitor around the frame, that will help prevent future rust.

Good luck, I redid my windows with the vw rubber and it look ok. After deciding to completely redo my patrol I cut them out so I'm hoping you found the one.... now if anyone can find the sliding window rubber we'll be golden

Can you post a profile of the rubber you are after with some measurements. We have different side windows in Oz. Mine are fixed. I will see what I can find.

River. Thanks. Yes cleaned the rust, plugged the holes, used rust inhibitor and painted. The guy who fitted a new windscreen to my other G60 did use a sealant, it was messy (and he knew what he was doing) and I suspect will be very hard to remove.

The solution .......

After hours of effort searching google, ebay and contacting suppliers I finally found the rubbers that I were after :D. These are now fitted so I know they work.

I thought I would post the results for others to use in the future.

I needed a rubber for the rear cab window (of a cab/chassis) and decided to find a windscreen rubber as well. There are many suppliers of moulded G60 windscreen rubbers on ebay, but I thought I would see if I could source a rubber along with the cab rubber.
G60 Cab Window Seals..jpg
I found an Australian manufacturer of rubber. Ambassador Industries Pty Ltd http://www.ambassindustrial.com.au/. Under glazing rubber they had two rubbers that I thought could work.
G209 for the rear cab and G309 for the windscreen.
G209 G309.jpg
Ambassador didn't answer my emails.

I finally found http://ozautomoulds.com.au See under H-Moulds Rubber. They had the G309 on their web site. I contacted them via email and phone and they were very helpful.

They had the G209 even though it wasn't on their web site.

So I ordered 8 m of G209 @ $6.50/m and 8 m of G309 @ $5.00/m. Plus freight of $25 for an all up cost of $117.00. Delivery was within 2 days.

CAB REAR WINDOW

The cab rear window measured 1.178 m wide, 300 mm high and was about 5 mm thick. It had a circumference of about 2.8 m. SO I cut a piece of G209 a little longer that that, fitted it around the glass and the cut it so it fitted exactly. I glued it with super glue. The rubber was just a 'snug' fit, not stretched or too loose.

I fed a 3.5 mm rope into the slot that fits over the cab metal and fitted the glass.

It was a tight fit. It took me about an hour to fit. I found the rope came out of the grove at the top corners and I needed to use a screwdriver to prise the rubber over the lip.

I think the rope was too thick.

No sealants were used.

The finished product was perfect.

WINDSCREEN

I needed an new windscreen (glass). I purchased one from autoglasswarehousebrisbane. Although they say local delivery they deliver to most capital cities via a wholesaler. You just pick it up from them. Cost was $120. Highly recommended.

The windscreen measured 1.430 m wide, 385 mm high and was about 5.5 mm thick. It had a circumference of about 3.6 m. So I cut a piece of G309 a little longer that that, fitted it around the glass and the cut it so it fitted exactly. I glued it with super glue. The rubber was just a 'snug' fit, not stretched or too loose.

I fed a 3.5 mm rope into the slot that fits over the cab metal and fitted the glass.

Fitting was a dream. It worked well and only took 10 minutes.

No sealants were used.

The finished product was perfect externally. Internally the rubber at the corners had a gap between the glass and the rubber. However it isn't noticeable. Maybe this is not an issue with a moulded windscreen rubber.

The cost of my new windscreen and me fitting it was about $150. Previously I paid a professional to fit the same to my other Patrol. The cost was $400.

I can now see why the windscreen rusts out. Both moulds hold water!

Excellent foot work! Congratulations on being diligent and finding a great source for the rubber. Sounds like a job well done. :handgestures-thumbupright:
