Thomas electric winch - Pics added

Post by Gnu »

Hi guys, I reasently picked up an old school worm drive Thomas electric winch for my rig, I'm trying to find some pics of one of these on the front of a g60 but haven't had any luck, plenty of the PTO version but these are a bit easier to mount as they don't have the extra gearbox on the front with the elec motor hanging off it. I'll try and get some pics up later on of what I'm dealing with to give a better idea.
Thanks gents

Ok Guys this is the Winch in question

This is the Rig I intend on fitting it to

And this is A Pic of one fitted to a 40series Landcruiser - Note the worm drive is upside down which makes for a much simpler fit with better clearance but I don't think the worm gear bearings would like this orientation to much, what are our thoughts on this?

looks pretty neat. vintage for sure.

I'm not familiar with Thomas, but it would seam that the gear needs to get plenty of lubrication. if that works with that orientation, then it maybe you're okay. It seems like it works for the landcruiser. I'm anxious to see how you deal with your frame rails. like mine, it doesn't appear that they'll be long enough and you'll have to extend to accomodate the winch. I haven't tackled that on mine yet.

good luck.
Don.

Hi Don,

The winch will certainly work like that and I believe the worm gear would be ok for oil as the main gear would drag oil up to it but being low speed i don't think the bearings at either end would be happy as I think the gears would be moving to slowly to rely on oil 'flick off' to lubricate them, One Idea I had for upside down operation was to over fill it to the bearing level but unfortunately there is no seal where the centre axle runs through only a bronze bush so any more than half full and oil will just drip out!

As for the Aussie Thomas Winches they are of similar design too your US Ramsey wormdrive winch, and yes the rails are to short for it to slot right in, generally what people do with the PTO version I've seen is to build a winch frame then the bumper bolts to the winch frame in the process being pushed forward around 3 inches at a guess

Cheers
