Wiring question - what do all these wire things do?

Flames? Lights wiring, alternator/generator, etc.

Wiring question - what do all these wire things do?

Post by soft60 »

First - total Patrol Newbie here, and although I once was a mechanical engineer (in large part because electricity frightens and confounds me) I have almost zero electrical / wiring harness experience.

Returned from a shake-down drive of my new 69 Soft-top (that was just frame-off-restored by someone who appeared to know what he was doing) to find the washer-fluid bottle hanging by a hose and a wire. It seems to have vibrated free of the wedge-fit bracket and I found 3 disconnected connectors. Not two, not four; three. After playing a bit, I figured out which of the two female connectors belonged to the one male, and washer fluid is again flowing triumphantly toward the wind screen.

I have not found a mate for the other female connector, which emerges from the harness just above the steering shaft near where it passes through the dash. See bottom photo, blue wire with red stripe, shown emerging from harness and free end tucked back under itself near emergence point. Any ideas what this is and to where it should be connected?

ALSO - top photo shows another homeless connector emerging from the harness near the generator. It appears to me that this is a ground that just needs to be attached to the body, but please confirm. If this were a Camry, it would already be grounded to the ground.

Apologies if my terminology is incorrect and thanks in advance.

David

Wiring is like plumbing --

I suspect that you are correct -- the black wire is ground and should be attached to the bolt that hold the regulator to the fender. Be sure to verify it first. If it's the wire I think it is, it also attaches to the alternator body. Test the resistance between that point and the wire in question -- It should be nearly zero ohms. If it's zero, connect it. If the resistance is more than a couple ohms, don't connect it as it may not be the wire I think it is. ;-)

The only Blue-with-Red (LR) wire I see in the engine area on the schematic is for the windshield washer pump. The heater also uses a LR wire, but those should be on the other side. Hmmm.

For giggles, I've attached the '69 wiring diagram for you.

Good luck!
John

I think that ground connects to the frame, under the steering shaft where the inner fender bolts to the frame, as I recall.
Beyond any hope for intervention

The earlier schematics show a connection to the regulator attachment screw that continues on to ground which is the frame. River is likely correct -- the connection at the regulator may already be made and that lead is the one to the frame.

After you verify that it is indeed a ground wire, make sure that the wire lug is clean (use sandpaper to clean it) and there is a spot of bare metal at the point you attach it. You can spray some paint over it after you've attached and tightened it down to prevent rust.

Here's a chunk of the '66 wiring diagram showing the attachment at the regular and the lead to ground

Thanks Faux and River,

I MIGHT have determined what is going on here. PO added a dash switch to control the wipers (can just leave original wiper switches in on position and control with dash switch) and another to control the washer fluid. The lost blue/red wire might be a vestige of that modification.

I will connect ground to frame and pray for no fires.
