Really old stuff that got saved. Here are the old Nissan Patrol Club America messages from the 'General' category. Warning, it's dusty in here!

Couple of things it could be1 your clutch may not be disengaging properly and so is trying to drive the gears as you attempt to change to low2 ensure that you are in 4wd first as the t/case wont allow you to engage low while only in 2wdThe 4wd lever may appear to go into low but some of these have a spring on the mechanism so that the lever moves to 4wd but only when the gears are lined up will it actually go in , this would prevent low ratio being selected... so try to put it in 4wd first , then travel 10yards or so in high ,then try to engage low

Done some more thinking on thisYour 4wd selecting lever is attached to a shaft that slides in and out between two and four wheel drive positions ( the shaft slides into and out of the t/case housing )This shaft has a detent groove in it ( which you cant see) which allows a spring loaded pin to move into this groove when 4wd is selected, allowing the high low shaft to move into low ratio in that the other end of the spring loaded pin can now be moved side ways ie by selecting 4wd you create room for this pin to move out of the way of the high low shaft and so into low ratio. If your 4wd lever has not gone far enough or too far (due to wear on the lever or links or axis bushes maybe )this pin cannot move sideways so selecting low ratio is impossible.Hard to understand so grab your manual and have a look.Rob

I had the same problem, checked the detint  stuff. It turned out to be the nut on the splined shaft. If you remove the indented cover off of the transfer case where you will see tail shaft, check for the nut if it fall off it will set on top of the gears not allowing the shifter to go into low. Hope that helps. Vern
