Door Panel Material Ideas

Post by Marshall »

I'd like to redo the door panels on my 67 and wondered what others have done. Below is pic of how they are now. It looks like the black panels are made from masonite. Ideally, I would love to make metal ones, but for now something else will suffice. What was the original material? What have you guys used to make new ones?

You can see I also have two speaker holes cut out, (I have removed the cheap plastic speaker covers). I was toying with the idea of putting a marine radio under the passenger seat, to conceal and not change dashboard aesthetics. So I'll leave the holes and get metal mesh speaker covers and paint them to match.

The original door panels were made from something similar to Masonite but not as thick. It was a thin wood particle board. The outer surface was textured. I used to find sheets of it at the hardware store but I think it's getting harder to find.

I have some that have just been spray painted, and others that have been wrapped in vinyl. Either way adds a little custom touch.

I like your idea for the speaker holes.
Beyond any hope for intervention

Thanks, I like the RFP idea. I used some similar material on my Land Cruiser, when I redid the full doors to be waterproof. I'll get a sheet and start cutting!
