P40 engine parts that work and those that don't

I am surprised there is not already a thread on this, in fact I was kind of expecting a sticky! Esteban knows a lot about this. Having done x3 P engine rebuilds using P40 parts I am seeing what works and what doesn't.
What works:
head gasket - OEM still available from Nissan if you want to use a good one
oil pump - OEM still available from Nissan
fuel pump - OEM still available from Nissan
camshaft - OEM still available from Nissan
seals and gaskets - all work except for the timing case cover
oil cap and oil cap gasket - works just fine
distributor - all P40 dizzy's work
oil pan - works fine
pistons & rings - works fine
valves and springs - works fine
bottom end bearings - all work except for #1 which you need to use from the PPU engine. Esteban correct me if I am wrong here.
lifters & guides - work fine
What doesn't work:
anything time gear wise - P40 is a chain driven timing gear, case is completely different along with internal parts
carbs - completely different
What I am unsure on:
manifolds - no idea
head - as an assembly, I think it will work though
crank - no idea
flywheel - no idea
Please add to this what you know.
Cheers

I have both engines at home. One of these days I'll get off my arse and take photos and measurements for reference. Thanks for the info Ian

Very comprehensive list Ian.
The only correction I'll make in your list is regarding the valve lifters. Totally different in the P40, and needs to be in place before the camshaft is installed.
There is a P40 parts manual, coming from a Komatsu Forklift in the Manuals section:

The manifolds bolt on directly

. My brother did this years ago.

Well, that is really good news on the manifolds. I say this due to carbs. The Hitachi's are difficult to come by if you don't already have one. Weber is expensive, mixed results with others. The P40 has a two barrel carb, more modern in design. Probably a lot of effort to track down the manifolds just to get a better carb but it is an option. Why did your brother swap to the P40 manifolds. May be able to still get an OEM P40 carb from Nissan. I will search Amayama. I bought one years ago on Ebay for the P40.
Good info on the lifters. I know the cam works cause we just put one in a P engine.
Cheers

The swap was done in the 80s. Plenty of parts available from Nissan in Ecuador at that time, and the dealership owners where friends so a good discount also.
My brother didn't like the Hitachi single barrel a bit, so he put the car & manifolds from the P40. Had to work a little with the linkage and also a minor issue connecting the muffler pipe. The overall improvement was minimal compared with the cost so I didn't do it. Mileage was better, and overall range much smoother.
The second stage of the two barrel was vacuum actuated. That posed a challenge in the 9800 feet altitude of Quito (2800m).

What about freeze plugs?
If I order a set of P40 freeze plugs from a forklift supply house, they should work just fine, yes?

Robert, while the old freeze plugs are out, can you measure them?
I hope that the plugs are the same for the two blocks, the P and the P40. From old posts from RiverPatrol I have them at 40mm for the side plugs, and 50mm for the ones on the rear (block and head). But I think they should match exactly a measurement in inches for the P engine, which they don't.
Again, you are the guiney pig on this one! Thanks.

My research (following several hours on the phone today with numerous forklift engine rebuilders

) indicates that
all the main bearings between the P engine and the PPU engine are compatible: Here are the part numbers for a full set of main bearings:
12207-58010 - standard (if you do a Nissan parts-counter search on the P engines' original main bearing part number 12207-58000, then 12207-58010 comes up as an updated compatible part number)
12209-58010 - for crankshafts that have been ground .25mm undersize
12210-58010 - for .50mm undersize cranks
12211-58010 - for .75mm undersize cranks
12212-58010 - for 1mm undersize cranks
I am ordering a set of 12209-58010 for my 65 engine right now - I will report back if they arrive and turn out to be wrong...
