60Patrol

Hey guys my name is Travis and I come to you all to seek advice with my 1969 Nissan Patrol. My Grandfather had given it to me after his passing in 1994, a great and much appreciated gift. It had been basically been sitting (with the rare occasion it was moved from location to location in which it was towed) since around 1996. I have had some friends tell me I need to start with tasks like drop and flush the fuel tank/lines and other like projects. I am not overly mechanically inclined and don't currently have the knowledge but am willing to learn. I am hoping that there may be members that have had or currently have a situation like mine in where the Patrol has been stagnant for nearly 20 years. Where should I start? Is there a Chilton type guide out there for this year? Or does anybody have an owners manual(mine was lost)? Any and all advice much appreciated and I look forward to talking with you and hopefully walking with me as I bring this awesome piece of machinery back to life.

You've made it past step number one - mechanical inclination is simply a skill that, like all skills, requires nothing more than time, experience, and practice... and commitment.

Your Patrol looks like everything is there and complete - you've got a great foundation to start with... Did it run and drive when it was parked in 94?

Haha... I think MOST Patrols out there fall into the same category as yours.

You'll get a bunch of opinions on where to start, and there really is no perfect answer- just start somewhere- A lot of folks like to begin with the pressure washer- blowing off 20 year's worth of grime so they can see what they're dealing with, which is a great idea... Personally, I would unhook the ignition coil, remove all the spark plugs, pour some light oil or automatic transmission fluid into the spark plug holes, and let it sit a couple days - after that, I would install a fresh battery, turn the key, and see if the engine cranks... If it does, then you are ready to start bringing that beast back to life....

Drain the gas! I learned the hard way that stale gas will trash the engine.

Moore_rb's post has a lot to get you started. The links to the documents section will keep you busy for a while. You will find every service manual, parts manual and cheat sheet you need there. There actually is a Chilton's for the Patrol and other early Datsuns. It shows up on eBay sometimes. Maybe that's a future project for me - to scan the Chilton's guide and upload it.

Don't hesitate to ask questions. We have helped lots of people that are willing to learn.

You probably will beat me in the number of generations that have ridden on your Patrol. In mine, my grandparents, my parents (original owners), my brothers, my daughters, and now my grandsons! 5 generations and counting!
