INSTALLING SOFTOPS

Post by G60michael »

Hi everyone, just a general thread about installing a softop canvas.

I am not really use to fitting up canvas but i do know that the canvas is secured in rope runners above the windscreen and on top of both front doors.

I need to know how is the Canvas Side pieces fixed to the uprights behind the front doors ? (attatched are photos from swerve)

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers G60michael

Michael,

I'm now on my 7th canvas top. Great looking but very cumbersome to install.

The process that I've follow is this one:

FRAME

Attach all the frame parts, with the exception of the 2 tubes that go inside each the lateral panels (with the windows).
Do not tighten the bolts at this time.. Please note that there should be a rubber washer between the pipes at the joints, and the holes are elongated so you can adjust the tension of the canvas a little bit.
For the lateral panels, there's a thick pipe, like 25mm (1") in diameter that goes at the top. And another one, solid and thin, like 8mm (5/16") bar, that goes at the bottom. These will go once the lateral panels are in place

CANVAS

1. Pick a good sunny day, so the canvas will stretch a bit.

2. Slides the lateral pieces first (the ones with the windows) They go from the top, down.

3. Fold the canvas top loosely and upside down over the hood (bonnet) with the front piping facing the windshield.

4. Slide the front piping edge of the canvas top through the channel at the windshield all the way, from one side to the other.

5. Slide the lateral piping of the canvas top through the channels over the doors.
Slide a small amount on one side, then switch to the other side, and keep going between the two until everything is complete.

6. Slide the top tube into the folded flap of the lateral pieces (the ones with the windows) as well as the bottom bar.

7. Secure all the hardware.

I'm sure there's going to be some editing needed here, and the input of others will be valuable. Memory plays some tricks.
