One could argue that it reduces the chance of "giving" someone a door ding... You never think much of that until you park next to a brand new, shiny Mercedes S600 -- you know something that costs more than my house -- and the kids FLING the door open to jump out! -- heart skips a beat or three! --

If for no other reason, that is a good defense for the ol' family mini-van... and scissor doors too!
