60Patrol

Hello, I have recently joined and have been chatting away in the introductions section so far. Looks like I should put up some more pictures and see how much we can learn about these cars. I've had a GQ for a long time and know how great Patrols are however I'v never really gotten into the older ones.........until now!

So here we go, this is all we know. She's a short 60 from '76 and has not been on the road for a long time. The previous owner bought it for about 100 bucks for his wife to use around their block. It had no working clutch so apparently she'd just start it in gear and drive to where it needed to be and simply turn it off. So cool, love that it still did that for years, tough old things. Then it just never got used one year and that was followed by another year or so of sitting until my mate was asked if he knew anyone who would want an old Patrol....the rest is history and it's now sitting in my yard.

Or goal is to fix it up to reliable running condition to be used as a hunting rig and for fun in the bush. We've both got GQ's for the really tough long distance stuff but rekon that this could be a real lot of fun to do up and drive about the scub ....spotting wildlife.

A hunting vehicle is an excellent use for this old '60.

Well we did some more work on the 60 last night. All the lights that are still on the car work now, including the indicators. Even managed to get the high/low beam switch working after hitting it with WD40 morning and night for about 3 days. There power to all the circuits on the fuse board also. Next step will be testing the ignition and coil. But for now I will put up some random pictures of the car, comments are always welcome.

Well isn't that just special. This G60 is more and more like the one in the video. It's amazing that it's still running on the mechanical fuel pump.

Yep, I hope it will keep running on the mechanical fuel pump too. Today we took off the rocker cover and had a look. Not rusty in there and it all seemed to turn over well enough so we gave it an oiling and put the cover back on. Also checked the fuel lines and they all ran clear petrol so that was another good sign for us. Now it needs the thermostat housing to be fixed so we can have a look at starting the beast.

Been fixing the switches on the dash. To start with everything was seized but with some wd40 over a couple of days we managed to get all the dash switches functioning. Pretty solid design lends itself to a long life. Here are a couple of pictures of the drivers side area. Have taken out the seat, not original from the look of it, so I could get better access. Even the high/low beam headlight switch is still connected and works. The floor however, has left the party and poor old high beam switch was left hanging.

Picture of the dizzy, one of the clips has a busted tip on it but it looks to be holding so it can wait. Opened it up and was all pretty clean in there and the points were still shiny .
Very clean engine overall apart from the paint fleck that came of with the high pressure washer. Very few if any oil leaks and the oil in the engine looks clean too.

Checked engine oil, should do for a trial start.
