Wow...opened up fuel pump today

Today as I stared at the original pump, I wondered why the PO cut the lines and installed a cheap non-functioning electric pump. The original pump looked good. Well, curiosity got the best of me so I removed the pump and opened it up. I spent about an hour cleaning the mess from inside the pump and 45 degree pipe. I will put it back together in the morning and see if it works. I think it may be salvageable.

Yikes! No wonder the carb was replaced.

Did you take apart the bottom section to inspect the diaphragm? That is another possible failure point.

Yes, took it completely apart. It was a mess. I reassembled this morning and bench tested.....success!!!! Unfortunately, the hard pipe from the pump to the carb is clogged also........uggggg. I imagine the pipe from the pump to the tank is clogged also, not to mention the tank itself. I plan to drop the tank next weekend and send to a shop for thorough cleaning.

I've always used baggies/marker to keep things organized. Also take plenty of before and after pics with the cell phone just in case.......

Awesome!!! I'll bet that many fuel pumps that have been bypassed could be rescued this way, too.

Good luck with the metal fuel lines. A nice long, stiff wire and some compressed air is a good start. Even after all of that, keep plenty of extra fuel filters on hand.

Im going to see how much a new line would be. Do you happen to know the line size from the engine area to the tank?

I bet mig wire would be handy...nearly free..and stiff enough to push through.

I don't know the size off-hand. FYI - if you haven't already figured it out, everything on the Patrol is SAE, not metric.
