Can the rear end gear ratios be changed in a Patrol? I need a better highway speed. Or am I stuck with an engine and tranny swap to get this? Is there a way to get this? Also is the Patrol motor Patrol only? I'm investigating buying a Patrol and am new all around to them. ntchbak@aol.com

; There is no way to get different axle gears for the G60 Patrols like mine and yours. Only other option is an axle swap... If so, Suzuki Samuri's and Toyota Landcruiser FJ-40's have passenger side offset diffs front and rear. Might wanna think about that... Try MSN Messenger 6.0 with integrated webcam functionality!

OK...why do you need to go fast in a 1960's Patrol?? There can only be a few reasons, one you live in the city. Two you are not close to off road tracks. The Patrol is a very rare vehicle and not designed to do 80mph like todays cars. It will not handle well at those speeds and with a stock motor you will have it reved so high you will eventually blow a hole in the block. All my Patrols cruise real nice at 50-55mph. Just like they are meant to do. If you need a 4wd that will cruise the highway at 70-80mph then why not a sweet Bronco or similar?? There is a a very nice Bronco on ebay that sounds more like the rig you need. Or if you must have a Patrol why not find a shell of one, they are around for cheap and then do what you want to it. Just don't take a good stock Patrol and trash it so you can keep up with traffic on the highway....there just is not enough stock ones left for that. They were not designed to do this and using them for things they are not designed for will either kill it or you won't like it. Without a new engine, tranny and rear diff you won't have a rig that will keep up with LA traffic. Of course these are just my opinions....

Though true you can not get different axle gears, you could change the ratio by changing to a taller tire. To achieve this you probably need a lift though. it would allow you to keep your current axles though. As for the motor, it is pretty much Patrol only althouh very similar to the P40 and the PPU engines found in some industrial equipment. I once read where the Patrol engine was in  a Scout from another country, but I don't know much about that. If you decide you want to swap axles, good for you. It's your vehicle and you should do with it what you want to make it a driver for you. Besides, it's hard to keep a Patrol all stock and road worthy with parts so scarce. Seems like when someone finds parts for these things they hoarde them for themselves anyway.

I haven't thought about a Suzuki swap. Are the gear ratios higher? enough for at least 55-60 mph on the highway without over revving the engine?

you can do 55-60mph with stock engine and drivetrain, rpm's are at about 2700 at 55mph. I did not mean to sound harsh in my first post, the net has that effect sometimes. Every Patrol deserves to live and be used...I just feel for a swap or custom project the rigs that have blown an engine or similar are the best for this use. Jon got his builder project for about $100 bucks missing rear axle. He is making the rig live again after who knows how many years it sat. I have 2 patrols that are missing the engine so these are the perfect ones to build up and make live again....a fairly clean stock Patrol is not IMO.

To the gentleman with the gear ratio issues.  Sir I recently sold my Patrol whish I'll probably regret for the rest of my life, however I really in my opinion think 55mph in a Patrol is cool anyway.  Gives people on the highway to see one of th rarest 4wds in the states and with the doors and top off gives ya a chance to enjoy the views especially in New Mexico!  In addition, mine was highly unstable at higher speeds and as you know they aren't equipped with a cage or proper restraints in their factory format.  Not wot worth your life or anyone elses just trying to make it some where one hour faster.  And you'd definately miss your 4:11 's when off roading.  I agree with the other guy who said buying a bronco or even a Jeep is a better choice that alteration.   Carl

I think the speed is the reason they didn't sell well over here. They were a well built workhorse but not intended for highway use.Why not get a Defender 90 ? The Patrol look and a good road vehicle ? (I know-- too expensive)

; A better choice, IMO would be FJ-40 axles. I forgot, after 1977, they changed to a more highway friendly gear ratio of like 3.something rather than the 4.10 gears the 77 and earlier had.Suzuki Samuri axles are like 1/2-ton. The FJ-40 axles are 3/4-ton.Im swapping in a 1970 Landcruiser rear axle, and its prolly the easiest swap there is.You would have a wide selection of front axles, because many of them are already offset to the right side...Ive also noticed that the Mitsubishi Montero/ Dodge Raider rear axles are offset to the right side, but they have IFS for the front...Just giving ya some info there to sink your teeth into...
