stock 69 patrol

     I Just picked up a 69 patrol which is pretty stock from the looks of it,and was wondering if the drive train is worth keeping due to the lack of parts or would a drive train swap be better. I want to have a very capable, and reliable rig. what are the most popular swaps and why? what about the axles? I realy dont know anything about it. Any help would be appreciated.

I also have a 69 Patrol with the sock running gear, except for the Toyota Fj-40 rear end. It depends what your going to use it for. Mine is just for weekend use and I don't do any rock crawling. The stock motor is very industrial and has a lot of low end pulling power. The 1st gear is a little high, but for what I do its fine. I have pulled a few jeeps and yanked out some stumps with mine. I put in the fj-40 rearend so I could put in a air locker. Someday I will put in A fj-40 front end with disc brakes. Wet 4 wheel drum brakes can be scary in a heavy rig.      Willie

i also run a stock 69 patrol. it has done a fine job for me, mainly on trails with small rocks and mud, she has never let me down, only draw back is i would like more articulation. the gearing is great for any tire size that will fit stock, i run 34" swamper, and it pulls me with out any problems

look to the grand wagoneer d 44's axles if you want to swap ; the wimpy fj40axles are weak !!! might as well putt in a set of dana 20's ; out of a cj5 ; as for the motor that is what makes your patrol a patrol ; a motor swap can be done butt you'll need tons of cash to Engineer it; and make it right might be easier to get a early bronco and stay with it; ; as for trail worthyness ill putt a stock patrol up against any early 70s ; 4x4 and leave it in the dust easonpatrol it will do much more than you think try it you'll be happy you did butt id loose the 34's and stay closer to 31's the 34's take all you're torq away ; ;

i agree as well i took it out last week end and got my feelings hurt 2x once on a hill climb and once in a mud hole. i think smaller tires would have helped me out both times, i took the tires off a suburban i used to have, they were free sort of, i had already bought them, but i am going to step down in the near future, with that being said i have some 34" tsl's for sale
