stuck in 4wd

Really old stuff that got saved. Here are the old Nissan Patrol Club America messages from the 'General' category. Warning, it's dusty in here!

I seem to have a problem with my transfer case shift. It is stuck in 4wd and I am getting ready to take it to a expert ( ha,ha,) but I wanted to throw this out to see if anyone might have an idea on maybe something I could do to loosen it. The hi-lo transfer shift seems to work o.k. .

You haven't been using it in 4WD with the hubs locked and on the ashphalt (or any non-slip surface) have you? If this is the case, then you probably have "transmission wind-up". Modern 4WD's have a third differential in the middle of the front and back axle to compensate for the difference in speed. The 60-series certainly doesn't, and is only designed to be deployed in 4WD when in the loose stuff, otherwise the tranny winds up and can lock in 4WD.   The usual fix is to find some dirt, and go forwards and backwards IN A CIRCLE a few times, maybe 20-30 feet in either direction. Stop, and then try to nudge it out of low range. Keep doing this until it releases. If it doesn't, ..... well, if I hear anything ....!?!!   I may be telling you something you already know, but I thought I'd offer...   Cheers Chris

Chris pretty much nailed it on the head. When I experienced the same problem with my MQ Patrol I jacked up the front wheels to release the "wind up". While it is in the air un-lock the hubs and see if this has done the job. If not I wrote a reply under "Transmission Noise" that may help you find another problem. Darren.
