Power Brakes

Here in the land where every thing is either up or down I find that braking on the Patrol is a little less than satisfactory. My thought has been to add a remote power brake booster ala early Ford pickups, Mustangs etc. The pickup unit is pretty bulky and to sensitive for a small Patrol but I understand the Mustang had a smaller unit.. The one piece master cylinder/power booster units mount so high that you couldn't close the hood. Anybody have input on this one ??

I thnk the brakes on a patrol suck. I woudl like to find some kind of aftermarket kit to upgrade..... Anybody ever heard of one. Jack

When I had an old Jeep, we bought Hydravacs which were very simple to install and only needed a vacuum line and hook up to the hydraulics. Worked fantastic. It was quite a few years ago though (late 60's). They had been used on a number of cars which we merely went to the junkyards and removed. I'd like to fix mine as well. I just totally rebuilt everything and it isn't any better. Maybe there is an old hydravac (sp hydrovac ?)to be found.

Hi there all ... Dave has said that he is working on a disk brake conversion. I too am looking into this as even with a decent booster (as found on my '79 G60-H) the drums are woefully inadequate after simple water crossings and mud have so much gloop forced into the drum that I feel like a baker turning out a cake every time I rip the wheels off to see why I can't stop. Disks are far better in these situations, and being of the opinion that brakes are a pretty neat thing when you need to stop, I feel that disks are the only way to go. I don't think that this safety crusade is going to alter the character of an otherwise stock beast. Being from Australia, we have an incredibly active 4WD scene, and I'm sure that I have heard of people using Toyota LandCruiser 40-series (BJ & FJ) disk units. Only problem seems to be getting the final shafts the right length past the burfield (CV) joints. Any ideas anyone? Cheers

Hooray for the Aussies, If you hear anything on the discs please keep us posted. Your Marks 4WD is a great place to do business. I got my 5 speed transmission from them.. Will be working the Power or Disc brake problem from here.

Fron what I am led to belive the axle assy's from a 1976 onward disc brake front end out of a Landcruiser 40 or 55 series will work. The diff ratios are the same and the diff offset is the same and I think the diff flange to driveshaft is the same. The only difference is the spring perches are off but can be ground off and re-welded on. When Landcruiser guys convert their drum brake 40's and 55's they use a later model booster, master cylinder and proportioning valve. Once I buy a P atrol I hope to try this conversion as the parts are more availible and the diff is stonger than the stock unit.

Does anyone out there know how similar a toyota fj40 front drum system is to a patrols front brakes? I have heard that fj40 drums fit perfectly on a patrol. Now, this is where I am going with this, a company called BTB Products (www.btbprod.com) makes a disc brake conversion kit for 2 early models of the Toyota fj40. If anybody out there wants to admit to knowing about the fj40 brakes, don't be afraid to share your knowledge.
