Pointless ignition

Has anybody found a pointless ignition kit for Patrols. Does anyone know of a compatible distributer interchange that has no points or is convertable. Have been searching to no avail.

I really don't think that you will find anything that is specifically for a patrol ( Meaning I have never heard of anyhting like that.) I woudl just try and see if there is anything out there that will fit in the hole. Any distributer will work but, The patrol have Vaccum advance. that you woudl want to keep. :) Jack

I did some searching on the ignition company name Pertronix. Quite a bit on the web. Here's their home page if anyone cares to pursue. I did find that they offered units for different types of old Nissans.; ; http://www.pertronix.com/ignitor.htm

I have changed over my distributor to a newer pointless dist. from nissan. The distributor with module and coil was over $400 and requires some minor modification but my patrol runs great with it.

"JBR", perhaps you can enlighten us as to the details of your conversion? What type of Nissan is the pointless unit made for? And what sort of mods? Thanks for the info!

I called Pertonix about a pointless ignition for a 1962 Chevy 235 straight six (similar engine with same carb so you never know) and they said that they made a model to work with the older Chevy engines. The model number is 1168. You can order it from Summit Racing. Not sure of the cost, but I plan on trying it soon since it gets real old replacing points. If someone does try it before me (needs it now), then post the results please.David

Crane Cams has an optically triggered ignition system to replace conventional breaker points systems. I'm in the process of converting my '66 to negative ground so I used Part No. 700-0231. For positive ground systems use 720-0231. The systems are Fireball XR700 and XR3000 at www.cranecams.com Marvin

hey guys, here is a site you might find interesting: http://www.emi.cc/hpv.htm This is the site of electromotive engine management systems. Alot of the import guys who want to build the ultimate machine use these peoples stuff. You can get kits that control only your ignition or ones that control ignition and fuel injection. We don't have to worry about the latter, unless someone gets real ambitious. The way they work, i believe, is that they use a crank angle sensor that can read the teeth of a sprocket looking thing you mount on the front of your driveshaft. Probably the hardest part of setting a system up like this would be getting the sensor mounted to your engine. Anyhow, this sensor relays information to a micrprocessor which controls the spark from the coils. This bypasses your traditional distrubutor and you could then remove the entire thing (old distributor). Most new cars use a system similar to this i think. Anyhow, that would be pretty trick. Only problem I can think of is that the sensor might get wet when fording a river and might cease to work. Also, these sytems are quite expensive I believe. Just an idea. Also, I am sure that Nissan must have made an electronic distributor for the model P engine because it was put in some of the later model mq patrols after 1980. To have a distributor with points after 1980 would have been really archaic. Another thing you guys might want to check out is Z cars, 810's and early maximas. These are the only straight sixes that nissan sold here (US) other than the patrol. Any z after 1975 should have electronic ignition and all 810's and maximas should also have electronic ignition. 280zx's are showing up like crazy in junkyards, so maybe one of you might want to yank a distributor off of one and see what gives. anyways hope these ideas keep your wheels turning.dav
