240 Patrol? or Patrol Z?
I know the subject has come up before, I'd still like to know if anyone had ever tried to mate a Z car engine to the Patrol? And, would any of the parts be compatable? Then what would we get, a unique 4WD truck that performs like a 240Z? Get really adventurous and put a lift to a 240Z, drop in the Patrol drivetrain....and you'd get a slow but capable Z car.....Yeah, that's it, switch drivetrains!! Perhaps I'd better get out and tractor around for a while.......

It's a fun thought but the practical side is; the Patrol has 241.3 cu inches the Z has 146 cu inches. The Patrol has 145 Hp @ 3600 rpm, the Z is 151 hp @5600 rpm. The Patrol has 235 ft/lb of Torque @ 2000 rpm, the Z has 145.6 ft/lb of torque at 4400 rpm. I doubt if the Z would bolt to the Patrol transmission otherwise there sure would be a lot more 5 speed Patrols. The aerodynamics of the Patrol are about the same as a brick so it would be tough for the Z engine to get the Patrol up to any real speed. Aw well it's a good thought anyway. Why not use a Chevy 292 straight 6 which fits with a little spacer between engine and trans. More displacement, more horses and more rpm.

Yeah, you could probably put a number of engine in your patrol with a little modifications, but what would really be the point if you leave the rest of the stock drivetrain? Only advantage to putting an old chevy six in (and it is a rather large advantage!) is that it would be much easier to find parts for. So what if you gain a little horse power and torque. Stock engine already has plenty. You would still only be able to cruise at about 60 before you thought the damn thing would explode. Nope, a full transmission and engine conversion would be best. Chevy just came out with a real humm-dinger of an engine two. Have you seen or heard of the new straight six in the trailblazer? Pretty bad ass engine, 275 hp or so with a similar amount of torque. Yep that would be sweet. As far as z-car engines go, hey you could probably get one to fit, just wouldn't bolt up to easy I bet. The 1980-89 or so patrols were available with an L28 (z car engine) in austrailia. Lot of good that does us here though. Word has it a popular conversion down their is to remove the carbed L28 out of the patrol and replace it with and turbo L28 out of a 280zx! Now that would make for a somewhat sporty patrol. What I reall think would be cool to have is a diesel powered patrol, but until I get some expertise and a shop, that ain't gonn happen (for me at least). Well that's all I got to say for now. I need to stop dreaming and start doing if you know what I mean!!
