Patrol Questions

I am getting close to purchasing a patrol and i have a few questions. Is it possible to get seals for a patrol? Has anyone ever modified other makes of seals to fit a patrol? It appears that there might have been panels installed in the back part of the rig. I have seen some on the front doors of the patrol i plan on purchasing. It looks like a kind of tar board. Any ideas? My other question is in regard to the charging system. Can an alternator be installed instead of a generator? Has anyone done this? Thanks.

I have purchased a valve cover gasket from Nissanbut that is the only one I have asked about.There are panels in the top as well as the frontdoors. I have some used ones and one of my Patrolshas wooden panels that someone made for the doorsprior to when I bought it. They are stained and lookreally nice. Just an idea...jeepcj_6@yahoo.com

Hey Sean, Glad to hear you're thinking about purchasing a unique vehicle. I answer to your questions; 1) Seals - I've gotten a rear main seal and transmission seals from a Nissan Dealer in the last 10 months. 2) Generator/Altenator - I have an Alternator on my '67 Patrol, so it must be possible. I can try to get you a model number if you need one. 3) Door Panels - Yes there are supposed to be panels to the left and right and over the back door area of the Patrol. They are make out of some kind of soft, Peg Board-like material. Hope this info helps. Note: You can still get lucky and find salvage parts. I just got a whole front end, transmission, T-case and a bunch of other stuff off a guy locally. Dreams can happen! Best of Luck! -Joe

Thanks for the replies. I would like to know the model number of the alt. and how it mounts in (same mounts as the gen.?). Also what about window seals? Does anyone have pics of the panels installed in their rigs? Thanks again!

My Alternator is a Delco Remy marked Made in the U.S.A. There were 3 sets of numbers; 1)1103048 63A - Stamped on casing 2)9C28 12VN G - Also Stamped on casing 3)7127 - Printed on Side of casing It has worked just fine ever since I've owned my Patrol (1 year). I also have a generator off another Patrol, but I don't plan on putting it back on. I hope this helps. -Joe

Mikey, It's a '67. Has Anyone solved the brake problem that i have heard about? What can be done to make them better? Thanks again to all who have responded!

Hey Joe-

How did you go about wiring that Alt up. Is it just one hot from the Alt to the Bat and the idiot light wire to the Alt? Did you need another bracket to help secure it?

I guess I was lucky with the Alternator. I came with my Patrol. It is definitely held in by the usual, slotted, and thus, adjustable alternator bracket, and it looks like someone spliced up the wiring to make everything work. I'll have to take a closer look at it and see if I can give you more information. Joe W.

I converted my '66 to a Delco alternator PN 7127-9. The voltage regulator was replaced with a junction block to connect the generator output (white/red wire) with the white wire going to the amp meter. These wires were connected to the A & B lugs on the regulator. There is also a two lug connector on the side of the alternator. The terminals are marked 1 for the white wire and 2 for the red wire on the standard connector. The red wire senses battery voltage and I ran to the B terminal on the starter relay. You could also run it to the + terminal of the battery which reminds me, convert from positive to negative ground. The white wire goes to a red light that I added to the dash. The other lug on the light goes to the terminal on the temperature gage with the yellow/green wire. This gives the light switched power when you turn the key. When I converted the ground (+ to -), I switched the wires to all the gages. The alternator case has a ground terminal (bolt into case) which I ran to the frame. Most of this information I got from land rover pages that did the same type of conversion. One page is: http://www.thelen.org/LandRover.html . The mounting bracket was made by bolting a 6" piece of 1.5" angle iron to the generator bracket to attach the alternator mount from an early 80s Nova. There was some additional bending of the generator bracket to get the alternator in the correct position. The fan belt was too wide for the pulley, so I got one off of an old Land Cruiser and put a thick washer under it to take up the space. I also had to get a longer belt. Good Luck, mjb
