I thought that it was about time to post an update...
We love the Patrol and have already racked up over 130 miles in it. I wanted to drive it in the rain, but since the windshield wipers are not current connected, that wasn't going to happen! But the kids love and demand being driven to soccer practice in it. They love riding in the rear seats facing each other. It's also pretty fun having strangers wandering up and asking about it. There are no badges on it right now so it becomes a guessing game... It's also amusing to see cars angle to get closer and then accelerate to see the front and the slow to be able to see the rear. Clearly they're trying to figure it out. Also, apparently we've joined the jeep-ish 4x club. Drivers in other jeep-ish vehicles do the salute/wave as we pass.
Jay's cub scout troop has even asked to use it in the Christmas parade this year! -- Our first gig!
When we first got it on the road, the engine was running super rich and basically gassing us out. Turns out that the float was adjusted a bit too high and overflowing gas and the timing was set at 0-degrees. A little tweak on the float was all the carb needed, but the timing wouldn't move past 0-degrees. I moved the oil pump drive over 1-tooth but then it was too far the other way. Turns out that the points were not set properly and that was pushing the timing off.
Clearly it's been awhile since I've adjusted points... Now, it's running pretty darn well.
I swear, I'd park the other cars if the transmission weren't such a bear! I can't count how many times I've tried to shift it into phantom fourth gear. I can downshift into second... but generally don't because it's lots of work. It doesn't mind going into first quitely when it's rolling one mile per hour or so. When stopped, it always grinds a bit going into first, but that's the benefit of not having a syncro, right?
I can't imagine a really long trip in third gear!
Does anyone have a Marks 5spd they'd like to part with?
Other things -- I think it really, really needs new shocks -- That and if I were to fix the left rear shock mount and connect the shock, it would probably drive better

Also, I need to make a gate to the back of the yard -- Currently I unscrew a fence section and lift it out to get the Patrol in or out... That's getting old, but I don't want to leave the Patrol out on the street... It's too special for that!
Okay, I'll admit it -- I am the one that wanted a generator... and am now in love with the alternator. I really want the Patrol to look period, but I'm also a geek at heart (and I love electronics). I'm thinking out loud here -- I'm toying with the idea of adding a fuel injection system that also controls the timing. Is that wrong?

Honestly, I'd like to add these while still making it appear stock (at least to the untrained eye) and be easily removable (e.g. no... or very few, permanent modifications) in case I ever want to return to the original carb/distributor set up. Has anybody added fuel injection to the P engine?
Having fun!
John & The Family Patrol!
