NAAH There's plenty of room in Tx for the both of us, besides my paint is probably a long time off. But I can guarantee that my scheme will be unique even if they are the same colors. ;)

Haha. No worries here either. My scheme when it is paint and not plastidip will be more of a Flat Dark Earth color so a little darker so maybe that will help. That coupled with all of the black on my racks and my soon to be 6 point roll cage being black should set it apart enough regardless.

I really neglected the rig over the winter. Late fall it started to run pretty badly and I've had some electrical gremlins with the lights/etc…..between that and having too many Datsun/Nissan's to tinker with (not to mention now that I took the top off and have no plans to put it back on any time soon its not much of a winter rig) ……that said I finally decided it was time to get back to work on it so I could enjoy it the rest of Spring-Autumn.

I thought initially maybe it was a timing issue…..upon inspection this was an issue…..fixed it….didnt fix the problem (backfiring through manifold and loss of any meaningful power)

Next I opened up the distributor cap to inspect and there was quite a bit of corrosion inside and a curious little bit of what looked to be possible carbon tracking but couldn't tell for sure……cleaned everything up which helped a lot with the vac advance arm and over all the idle got much better…..but the backfire persisted.

Ok…..so lets check the compression……150, 145, 30 (holy shit), 150, 40  , 150…..holy shit….not feeling good. Ok…lets pull the cover and look at the valves. Open it up…and wow all but 2 of them were TIGHT with no discernible gap….ok…got this al sorted out….compression test again all 140-150 :D AWESOME. We should be in business now…..it starts on the first turn, idles like a CHAMP. YES. NO. still backfiring.

Ok. Lets pull the weber apart and inspect it a little more….it had some crud but nothing too crazy……cleaned and rebuilt it anyway. Problem persists.

 Ok….think. What am I missing. I finally decided to look further into the distributor issue…..which I didn't really think could be the issue because it was just running so good ad idle and low RPMS. I will try anyway. As I look closer I can see that it is definitely carbon tracking as you can see where its been arcing between 3 points and probably throwing off the firing order quite a bit….I disconnect the coil wire from the distributor and the first 2 inches or so are fried to the point of being brittle and crumbling…..fortunately after the first 2 inches the wire is good. After some scrambling I finally realize that I have a shiny NOS water proof cap and rotor and install it. I turn the key….slowly creep out of the hangar :| ….I press the accelerator and 8-) FINALLY all is well.

I probably should have trouble shot it and found this culprit sooner….maybe were I a mechanic by trade I would have….that said everything I found really needed attention anyway so…..I cant really complain about the outcome

Hoping to get a few more things done in the way of progress as opposed to maintenance this Spring/Summer. I will probably try and finish up my temporary Plasti-Dip job being that I already have all the material and the passenger side that I completed held up very well so far. I had hoped to just paint the damn thing this year but between finding out we are cooking up our first child ;) and also deciding its time for my plane to get some paint it will prob get backburnered for next year.

I have been thinking of a few other things to look at though. I have some KC lights up top on the rack but I think I am going to go with some Rigid Industries lights there instead…..either 4 separate pods that mimic the old style lights or maybe even a bar…..we shall see. I also want floods on both sides and rear to give me 360 lighting around the rig and probably something down on the bumper too….a smaller light bar maybe ?

The other project I have been wanting to look at is my dash and half doors. As of now I hate my dash layout. the area between my glovebox and instrument cluster is a jumbled mess and In my infinite wisdom I thought at one time a stereo would be great mounted under the passenger dash…. A- It looks ridiculous and out of place and B- It kills knee room. It needs to go. Here is a photo of what it looks like now….

I want to basically delete everything and start over. Remove ashtray all together, eliminate one of the cig lighters, move all of the knobs to the very top, install a retro sounds MP3 Bluetooth compatible stereo in the center, get rid of the makeshift switch panel and temp gauge and install cool aviation style switches in the dash under the stereo to look stock to control my multiple LED lighting systems, etc. I know this isn't stock but…..I think it will improve upon whats there and will look very stock/period correct when I'm done.

As for the half doors…..I need to find some donor doors that I can remove the ridiculously high section on our doors from and then sheet metal over the window port …..anybody have some they want to part with ?

That's one of the great things about owning a Patrol: you don't have to be a mechanic to be able to fix one. They are so simple to work on, basic common knowledge is all you normally need. Good job!

And congratulations on the soon-to-be Daddy position! :teasing-binkybaby: :text-woo: That will take up all of your spare, and then some. ;)

Sounds like some fun plans for the Patrol. Better get them done before the baby comes. :D
Beyond any hope for intervention

FYI, Plastidip works great on the wiring harness tabs on the frame. Sometime around 66 or 67 Nissan started coating the tabs with rubber. But on any Patrol it is a good thing to do to help protect the harness and rubbing. Shrink wrap will work too.

I put Plastidip on the Jerry can holder on my Land Cruiser. To help with vibrations and noise. I put it on right before I went to Baja. Three weeks later when I came home it was pretty trashed and peeling off.

Cheers
