Re: Patrol'ing through South America
Here are pics with measurements if anyone wants to help me source these. I will have more pics of all the bearings, part#s, and measurements of all the rest of the bearings within the next few days.

Re: Patrol'ing through South America
Ok, here is what i have. There is a little bit of pitting, but its not real bad. Definitely in much better shape then the originals you have. If you want them they are yours. You can have them. Just reimburse me for shipping.

That is fantastic! Thank you so much2869ral wrote:Ok, here is what i have. There is a little bit of pitting, but its not real bad. Definitely in much better shape then the originals you have. If you want them they are yours. You can have them. Just reimburse me for shipping.
Later we will post the photos we have from the mechanic, but if 2869ral is already going to photo all of it, it will just be for fun I guess

Re: Patrol'ing through South America
the main shaft could be welded and machined back down to spec. Back in Mississippi, my father owned a welding and machine shop. He had a process where the worn shaft was chucked in a lathe and after heating the shaft a powder was applied that bonded to the metal, and after cooling could be turned back true, and it was good as new, and held up great to wear. i don't know if that would be available where you are or not, but this was 25 or so years ago, that my dad started using this so it has been around for some time. good luck on the repair, and since you are going to be looking for someone to build up the synchronize gears, the machinist might could fix the shaft as well.

Re: Patrol'ing through South America
I spoke yesterday afternoon with the mechanic in Argentina. He told me that the inside of the counter-gear is in perfect condition. Only the shaft and the needle bearings are needed. He also suggested the possibility of welding and machining the shaft, and then treating it (I assume is heat treatment). At this point I think 2869ral offer is the best solution, since those bearings might prove difficult to find over there. As you can see from the measurements I posted, the needle bearings are in exact standard (inches) measurements, and over there everything is metric, since most of their automotive and heavy equipment looks to Europe.sleepyzzz wrote:the main shaft could be welded and machined back down to spec. I also suggested welding the tips of the synchro rings as robs30m did, but the mechanic has never heard of it. I should add here a comment that robs30m told me when he did his synchros. He secured the synchro to a piece of steel with the same conical shape as the underneath of the synchro, to keep it from deforming under heat while welding. Robs knows this stuff. If somebody tries to do this without too much care, the synchros could be trashed. Probably Colombia is the only possible source at the moment for new synchros.
