Another exciting day... We're getting close!

But first thing's first -- Tonight the kids wanted to watch Godzilla vs. Mothra... The second scene starts off with a green soft-top Patrol! Now, back to business -- Joe spent the first hour or so with me putting the clutch together. Barritt spent the next couple hours while we lined up and connected the transmission to the engine. I finished up all by myself connecting shifters and other goodies. Jay spent the day at Six Flags Marine World... Emily wisely stayed inside, out of the heat!

It turns out that I really don't like the oil-filled air cleaner at all. It's gooey. I looked at the stacked, dry-filter method that Esteban posted about. http://www.60patrol.com/forum/viewtopic ... ter#p16065. I kind of that that one, but I mulling over an idea for a variation on it... think PLASMA CUTTER!

By the end of the day, the remaining pre-install list is very short!

I made sure to clean the flywheel and the pressure plate friction surfaces with acetone to remove any oil traces


I safety wired the bolts holding the throwout arm in place -- Just a quick tip that these bolts are not sized to match any sockets that I have (including 8-point) BUT, they fit PERFECTLY inside the end of a 1/2" drive socket extension!


Getting the engine and transmission aligned was a bear!


By lunch (after a quick trip to Ace Hardware for some bolts) the two parts were mated!


By the end of the day (and the end of my energy reserves!), here's what it looks like!

Aaahhhh the line up and meshing everything is a bit perplexing ....I only recall the vibration of yelling at it moving it just so.....I did not have that pansy aligning thingy mcCentering tool neither!!!
Really though it was just moving stuff a little and it fell into place like it should..... Clunk

Ouch- it must suck to be that tire...

This morning's project was a homemade spreader bar to help level the engine/trans combination. What do you think?

Should do in a rush!

Custom......Anything to help those poor valve cover corners from getting crushed

On a bit of a creative streak today -- That gooey oil bath air filter was too messy! So, I came up with a solution. Started with the sketch that Esteban uploaded awhile ago. One thing that I wanted was to keep the inner housing so the air filter element would not be visible from the outside. My goal was to make it look stock without the gooey mess.

First, I gutted the inner housing -- I should cut those sharp points off


This is why I did made the conversion -- YUCK!


This is the piece that makes the magic happen. I used a piece of 1/16" stainless steel I had lying around and my new, handy, dandy plasma cutter -- Cut a circle-ish to match the O.D. of the new air filter element.


This is the filter that matched up to the housing best. I think it's from a racing lawn tractor or something...


I enlarged the center hole on the inner housing so it will sit lower in the outer housing


The plate sits at the bottom of the inner housing and provides a seal for the bottom of the air filter


Now with all the pieces inside


There it is! From the outside, it looks just like an original oil-filled air filter. A little paint and it's ready to install


Was a great Patrol day -- we are really close to installing the engine!

Good work with the filter, John, and the fact you're keeping the original look.

In the picture you posted with the spreader bar I noticed that the emergency brake drum is not installed. Don't forget it.
