Oooh, exciting stuff! That's great to know that the Nissan dealers can still get some of the parts. It's interesting what they can and can't get. I have to say that it looks like Capitol did a capital job.

I love it!

So, today I wander into O'Reileys Auto Parts in Roseville to hunt down a thermostat. I was carrying the thermostat housing so I could match it up. Turns out a 70's Chevy V8 thermostat fits fine. I ended up with a 180 degree Murray 3358. But before the rest of the story, a side note...

I used my usual schtick and said that I have a real challenge and "are you up for it?"... The counterman says, "so, what's it for." I say, "a '67 Patrol." He says "I love those!" I'm a bit taken aback... As I'm sure you know, that never happens! Anyway, he says that his buddy has one. So I guess and say "In Penryn?" He says yes... So, it turns out that BigJoe and I kind of crossed paths!

Anyway, I tested both the old and new thermostats in the pan of water. The old one stayed closed until about 190 when I knocked it, then it popped open. It's a 160 degree one so that's not good. The new one started to open at just above 180 and was fully open at just about 195. That seems to high. According to the 60 Patrol service manual, it should start to open between 160 and 166 degrees and be completely open by 187 to 193 degrees Fahrenheit. I think I'm going to return it and get a 170 degree thermostat.

Actually got to work on the Patrol a bit today... Assembled the thermostat housing and got the water pump prepped. Discovered that despite having two full gasket sets and several misc gaskets, I one had have a thermostat housing gasket... and it was damaged! Suddenly, a light went on... I'll cut my own!

So, this gave me a great idea... I'm going to scan and save scaled images of each gasket as I install it so in the event I have to do this again (and the second engine is currently at the machine shop being rebuilt )

Dude.... SERIOUSLY ?!?!?!?!

These are AMAZING. But, I find it just a little bit disturbing that you had time to put that much detail into it...

Ummm - could you please hurry up and tear down your tranny and transfer case, and make up some templates for those gaskets as well?

Oh, and BTW... Those pics you posted above of the "drive-in slumber party..."


Why did you not just give each of those girls a set of sockets and wrenches and said "There's the Patrol, there's the engine, and over here is the cherry-picker... You've got until morning, so snap to it."
