I started it up today, put a little SeaFoam in the oil and the gas. I ran it at high idle for a while. It sure smokes

The alternator is only putting out 12.3 volts
I crawled under it and started scaping the built-up off and sprayed decreaser all over. I am going to start power washing.
The only bad rust I have found is on the body at each of the back doors just above the bumper, repairable.

Regarding the alternator, since it looks to be a Delco, please take a look at the following video. It probably lost its residual magnetism due to sitting for a long time with the battery dead. You to to excite the alternator again. Very simple and straight forward process:

Update on my Patrol
Been tinkering around
I spent two days underneath scraping and power washing trying to get 50 years of build-up off
Couldn't get the alternator excided, took it to O'Reilly's, they tested it, got a new one.
6 new plugs
Checked compression 4 cylinders were 130 and 2 were about 30, not good
You have to pump the brakes three or four times, I bleed the brakes but it didn't help. As soon as the peddle come back up you have to pump again, so I am looking for a rebuild kit or a new master. Any ideas
The radiator and the heater both leak, have them out ready to take to get fixed.

New headliner

rubber boot for 4 wheel drive leavers
Motor overhaul
I'm not sure what has been done to the motor, the oil pan has been off, the valve cover has been off, you can see the blue gasket sealer. The oil filter mount looks new.

Some guys have gone to a dual reservoir brake master cylinder here (for safety reasons), I replaced my master with a single reservoir instead of rebuilding and it works fine. The only components that are reused are rods that slide into the Piston. Much easier than finding a rebuild kit.

The single reservoir cylinder is easy to source for replacement. Number is on the forum somewhere here.

Rubber boots can be bought on eBay from a Colombian source. But that's prob down at the bottom of the necessary list . With low compression being one of the first to address.

For the brakes, replace all of the wheel cylinders before attacking the master cylinder. That's always the first place to start with brake issues on a Patrol that has been sitting and/or not maintained. They can be found on eBay.

In regards to the brakes, did you adjust the brake shoes? If not, you'll need to do the pumping that you mention, since a single travel of the master cylinder is not enough to move the shoes to make contact with the drum. I hope that can solve some of the pumping issue.

Regarding the radiator, a couple of members have replaced theirs with aluminum ones and with good results. I had mine done a replacement core, and was very costly compared with a new aluminum one. Something to ponder.

I think member curlrider11 is right, with the low compression being the first issue to address. Sorry about that. Please take some pictures during the inspection.

I believe the radiator can be repaired, it leaks at the seam at the top of the tank.
As far as the motor I will see if I can find someone to overhaul it. My $2000 patrol may not be a bargain after all.

John, the Patrol engine is the perfect one for doing yourself the repair. It will be a great opportunity to learn and you can save $$ that you can use somewhere else. And plenty of members here will help you with it, although remotely.

The engine can be opened while still in the car, With the head removed, the oil pan removed, you can take the pistons out, This will be your first step. There's good chance that the piston rings in those two cylinders could be broken, and that the reason for the low compression. If you do this, make sure to keep each piston with its corresponding connecting rod cap (they do have marks anyway).

I will have to think about doing the overhaul myself.
I need to get the brakes fixed, I removed one front wheel and took the brakes apart. The cylinders need to be replaced, one was leaking a little.
The master cylinder is leaking.
I need to find a place to buy new cylinders, shoes, and master cylinder. I've looked on E-Bay but couldn't find anything. HELP

Don't get discouraged, patrols just take time. Most of the critical parts can be found or suitable replacements fashioned one way or another. When I got mine a year and a half ago it was barely driving, stranded me every time .... Now it's a daily driver! Keep at it
