The starter will work on all years of the P engine fitted Patrols. (1962 - 1979)

Please note that the P40 engine that came around 1979-80 uses a different one.

My Patrol L60 is supposedly a 1961 model. Would this starter work on it? Just curious because the starter it has now has an 11-tooth cog gear that's fully exposed (no shroud whatsoever).

If your engine is a P engine, it will work. All the USA Patrols are with that engine. I'm a little confused by what you mean that there's no shroud. Could you please post a picture?

The above corresponds to a Hitachi S114-184, and that's the number stamped on mine (bought as a replacement many years ago!) With that number you can find other places as well.

Thanks for the response -- it's been busy here with home remodeling projects underway, so it took me a while to get back to this.

I disassembled my starter to clean it out and lube it, so I've attached a photo showing its mounting plate and cog gear next to the new starter. I didn't know the proper term for the partial cover over the cog gear for the new starter, so that's the "shroud" to which I referred.

Note that the cog gear on my starter has 11 teeth.

My Patrol is in winter storage, so I haven't tried mounting this new starter, but I have my concerns. What's your assessment?

It definitely looks like an aftermarket starter, or you have a totally different engine! Very interesting!

Thanks for giving this a look, Esteban. I definitely have a P engine. I'm unsure of the model year, though -- it was sold to me as a 1961 Patrol L60, but it came equipped with a hydraulic clutch, which I have heard wasn't standard till several years after that.

Just to clarify, are you saying that my old starter was an after-market one? The new one is the 18110N that was mentioned on this thread.

Glad to hear you do have the P engine. When you have a chance, post the numbers of chassis and engine so RiverPatrol can sort it out in terms of proper year.

Your old starter is the aftermarket one. Never seen one like it in the Patrol.

Hello Esteban and RiverPatrol--
Yes, I'd like some help learning more about my L60. I was told by the firm that sold it to me that it was a 1961 model (they even said that it had once been used by the Japanese embassy in Bogota), but I have my doubts. For instance, it has a hydraulic clutch, and I've been told that Model 60s had a mechanical linkage for the clutch up till the late 1960s.
It looks like the serial number of the P engine is P 16447. Let me know if it would help to know the VIN, but I don't know if those old VINs mean much.
