I really believe i can build a disc brake setup for the front axle. Maybe I will give it a shot in the next few weeks.

Here's what I'm personally thinking about the front disk brake prospects- and this is REALLY just idea juggling- I have not even removed a wheel or broken out a tape measure yet.

But, 60 series Patrols, for all their quirky and one-of a kind parts and systems, do have one attribute that is VERY common- the 6 on 4-1/2 wheel lug pattern.

That means there are a TON of possible floating disks out there that might potentially fit - 5 generations of Toyota 4x4's (trucks, 4Runers, FJ Cruisers, Land Cruisers), 5 generations of Chevy trucks/blazers/suburbans, even Nissan pathfinders and hardbody trucks from the 90's all used this same wheel lug pattern.

Heck- my boat trailer is even 6 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern, and I converted it to disk brakes just last year for about 400 bucks, using parts supplied by Kodiak.

so, getting the drums off it, taking some measurements, and hitting the pick a part junkyards on a quest to find a disk that fits over the hub and has the right offset is step one.

For calipers- I could use the same Kodiaks I used on my boat trailer- they fit inside a 15 inch wheel when used with a 12 inch disk, they were relatively inexpensive, and if they can stop an 8000 pound boat and trailer, they can stop a 3800 pound Patrol. heck, Kodiak is also another option that might already have floating disks that would work, as well.

so that leaves a caliper bracket, and hoses - the bracket can be fabricated or machined, based on the TLC design that Bosque linked to above, or, I can go back to the Kodiak guys and see if they'd be willing to take one of their standard 5-bolt bracket designs for a 6000 pound trailer axle, and custom drill it to fit the Patrol's knuckle...

so, even though at this point I have nothing but ideas to chase down - it just seems like there are a lot of options out there- hopefully one of them wll bear fruit.

or, maybe 2869ral will finish his disk brake project first, and all I'll have to do is copy HIS design, LOL

Well, Pebble will suffer without you.

It isn't very difficult to put a dual master and brake booster on it, you could even use Nissan parts since the later Patrols came with that setup. You'll probably need to somehow attach a fitting to the intake manifold for a vacuum source for the booster. Front disc will not be quite so easy. I haven't found a successfully completed build for that project yet. Several people have tried. I know there was one in SoCal, but he never shared his technique and sold the Patrol right after completing it. Although I am pretty sure our South American friends have done this successfully.

The stock setup definitely requires a proportioning valve, so this is just further evidence that whoever worked on the brake system didn't know what they were doing. I wouldn't spend too much time analyzing the brake master, it isn't stock or even Nissan. I'm pretty sure they guy said it was a Chevy master. Not compatible. But you're making progress! And BTW - many of us that have used the Patrol as a daily driver do it with the stock drum brakes. When they are dialed in right - bled correctly, adjusted properly, good shoes and cylinders - they actually work pretty well. I would love to see a successful disc project though. Something detailed that others could do also: buy this part here and bolt on here kinda thing. That would be awesome!

Butch, We have not seen one picture from you and that could spell trouble.

Give it up man.....you got that great barn find.....lets see what your workin' with.....even if it is not perfect as your roadster. We all have "patina". Sharing is a wonderful thing.

sleepyzzz, I am waiting because I got this thing perfect now and I am having so much fun driving it that I want to enjoy it for awhile before I put it on the auction block in Vegas in Sept...Then off to do another project vehicle :0)
I have $16k in the purchase and rebuild so we will see what she brings at auction...It is a sweet ride and rebuilt to be an everyday driver. Lots of attention when i drive it and have had a couple offers that would make me whole but would like to see what it will bring at a collector auction.

Scott, you have a beautiful ride, and i wish you all the luck on getting what you want for it. i just sold both roadsters and got what i wanted but no where near what i had in them. the auction house is going to charge just to run it through, and then their fee for selling on top of that. you might try E bay first, just to see what kind of response you get. that won't be near as much as the auction house, and you can always end the auction early for a local sale and not pay the sell fee to E bay. just posting the add with lots of pictures is about $30 and gives you lots of exposure.

I actually have bought several vehicles, including this one on e bay and think that it is a good place to find a bargain but not so good if you are selling......Observing the pattern for vehicles on e bay is very interesting and bidders tend to hold back if they think they might have to pay what it is worth because they can't see it or drive it. There fore the e bay discount kicks in and i have taken advantage of it many times. I can sell it locally for what I have in it but think it would be a fun experience to run it through the auction block and roll the dice. Thanks for your comments though and hopefully someone will want it just for the sake that you never see them on the street and the fact that there just are very few around in good running order.
