Re: 65 Patrol Rebuild Starts Here
If they over tighten the valve cover the sides will bow out, causing it to leak.
Beyond any hope for intervention

Re: 65 Patrol Rebuild Starts Here
Thank you, Leslie my valve cover is now bowed. Rafael says he can bend it back.

Re: 65 Patrol Rebuild Starts Here
Question for Patrol Patrons,
I have rebuilt mechanical fuel pump and plan to replace the electric one Presidio came with .......Unless I'm advised to keep the electric one.
I presume the mechanical one requires aggressive pumping on a start startup?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Presidio got a compression test today. Mountain testing is scheduled for Saturday. Can't quit figure out that double clutching on hill climbs. It will tricky I think.
Patrolling above the pasture now,

Re: 65 Patrol Rebuild Starts Here
Mine has the original Mech pump that I personally rebuilt and requires no pumping at all on startup.

Re: 65 Patrol Rebuild Starts Here
Thanks Justin, that is good information. I'd prefer the mechanical. However, my mechanic says i will need to re-tune the engine if I switch pumps. Does that sound right?
Compression test results
The cylinders were 140, 125, 140, 145,145,145...does that tell anyone anything? I presume that is psi.
Thanks to all,
L60Boerne

Re: 65 Patrol Rebuild Starts Here
Swapping fuel pums have nothing to do with tuning an engine. A carb just have a float to control the volume of fuel that it takes. In plain parlor, BS.
The low reading on that one cylinder should be observed over time. Once this engine goes into regular service this cyl will tend to equalize. Personally, I will not touch the engine.
The difference is not that much in real life, although the service manuals state otherwise.

Re: 65 Patrol Rebuild Starts Here
A couple of quick updates.
For my 1965 :
- the Napa stock # 745 upper radiator hose doesn't come close to fitting. I found one buy just matching, it is still crimped but will likely work.
- The Trident Water temp sensor from Australia was too long, they don't fit.
Question - I really need the air filter to fit correctly in my oil bath housing. I can't find a source within the forum threads nor in the parts compatability listing. Please direct me to a correctly sized filter, if anyone knows.
Thanks again,
L60 Boerne

Re: 65 Patrol Rebuild Starts Here
Thanks Esteban,
I really hate leaks and I have determined from wiping it is not from the valve cover. I guess it is the head gasket, between # 2 & #3 spark plugs. Did the compression numbers look ok to you? My service manual is over with Rafael or i would simply look up the specs.
That carb from Carbs Unlimited in Auburn Washington got my Patrol running very smooth. That guy knows what he is doing.
Regards,
David

Re: 65 Patrol Rebuild Starts Here
If you want the oil-bath original element, I've got one new for you.
If you wish to go to a dry filter, buy these two part numbers from Amazon and glue them together.
They are both 7" OD, 5 1/2" ID. One is 2 I/2" tall, the other just under 3" tall.
They are Kohler 24 083 03-S and Kohler 47 083 03-S
Mild Bill

Re: 65 Patrol Rebuild Starts Here
Calling all Patrol Whisperers,
It seems the speedometer cable going into the transmission connects to something within the transmission. I think mine on Presidio Patrol is stripped. Is there a replacement part for the speedo cable receiver/union?
Patrolling on occasion,
L60Boerne
