1967 Gauge Panel

My early 1967 #7763, that is mixed in with 1966 VIN numbers on the registry, had the early type speedo cable in it. I purchased a very nice dash cluster from a low mileage 1967 that has the later style speedo. I have a datsun 521 cable on the way from NAPA that hopefully will work out. I will get some photos uploaded. I think I have a 68-9 dash in the parts room also, and will get photos of it too.
My 1967 had this when I got it.

Zed, I remember that dash now, back in 2017 you sent me a pick but never gave me a price. Good thing I guess cause it would not work for me.

As promised here are some dashes that I have collected in my quest for parts of the past couple years.



Focusing on the Blue, Red, And Gray dashes:

The Blue is from my 1963 Parts truck.
The red is from a 1968 that the guy was listing parts as 1962 but it still had early horn but only 2 vents and color code tag on the radiator core support.
The Gray is from a low mileage1967 that Scott Sharpe was parting out to build a crawler, I bought a bunch of stuff from him.

The 1968 gauges has some similarities as the earlier gauge. As River mentioned the use of spade and plastic molex connectors in the 1968 dash. 1968 has the 3 position ignition switch with no push button, the wiper switch is in the push button location. Also missing is the flasher unit in the center, no mount for it. the gauges were still oriented the same way as the early models with speedo on the left. The 1969 I had, had left and right turn signal indicators and a light between them for high beam. The speedo was moved to the right side. It also had 4 way flasher in the center part of the dash (68 may of had that too).

On the '68 the switch on the start button hole is a windshield washer switch.

The gray dash obviously looks like your compatibility winner. One thing you can't determine though is whether your patrol used a gauge regulator. The regulator was introduced in '67 but you indicate yours might be a late '66. Your wiring harness has been molested too much to probably be a good indicator whether one used to be there. Unless it is still screwed to the firewall under the dash to the left of the steering column.

I will have to look for the regulator. I think the 1967 I got this dash cluster from was also a early 1967, Scott Sharpe on here had it. All the wiring for the combo gauge was intact. The amp wires were the only ones being used on a replacement amp gauge. The ends for all the other meters were taped off with masking tape and writing on them, but the tape was so old and baked it just crumbled when I was handling them. The original instrument light wire was cut to power lights for the replacement gauges. There are still two wires that are separate in the dash that I have not identified yet, green/black and black wire that are about 7 inches long. At first I thought they went out to the engine compartment but I am thinking that may be wrong. GW wire according to the wiring diagram is for one of the front turn signals. Once I get everything sorted if I have not found what they go to I will isolate them and power up and see what activates them. The black is probably a ground, I can determine that prior to powering up.

I'll get a picture of the regulator on my '68 today to see what color wires go to it. There also would have been one or two wires from the instrument cluster to the regulator. The wiring diagram says it's a green and yellow/red wire to the regulator.

I was just looking at that wiring diagram and I see the regulator but it does not confirm the color of wires. Do you know what voltage the regulator was supplying? My land cruiser has a 7V on the back of the gauge but it was bad so I mounted a honda goldwing 7V regulator on the firewall and just ran wires up to the gauge on it. I might have to do something similar. Looking at the registry mine is 07343 and there are a bunch of 1967's before me and a few 1966's mixed in after me.
I was unable to find where scott user name sjsharpe ever registered his Patrol. I will look under my dash tonight to see if I see anything.

It shows the wires as being 'G' and 'YR'. I do not know the voltage, I'll try to see if it is listed on the regulator itself. Sounds like you did with that Goldwing regulator exactly what this one is doing - it is mounted on the firewall. It supplies two gauges, the temp and fuel gauge.

I had a '65 once that had a resistor wired in to the wiring for the temp gauge, probably trying to accomplish something similar. I don't think it was factory.

I was just looking at the service bulletin from March 1966 and it talks about the dash voltage regulator and itis also shown in the 1966 wiring diagram at the 5 o'clock position in orientation to the combo gauge on the diagram. I did not see anything under my dash on my 67. I wonder if there is something inline on the harness.

Since all three of the ignition wires are tied together I would imagine the I don't have regulator as only the water and fuel went through the regulator.
