The post above from offroadkid has a link to the service manual. The service manual has the instructions for adjusting the voltage regulator. It describes the entire charging system, how it should work and how to test it. You probably should start there.

Second that. Regarding your question about how low the voltage could be, I'm guessing 11V. A healthy battery shows around 12.6V when charged.

thanks for the posting on the service manual. I reviewed the voltage regulator section - and its a bit too complicated for me. I think I will need someone to repair the regulator for me, or I will need to purchase a replacement. in the meantime, I can still enjoy the patrol - i'll just plan on charging the battery once a week.
