Today I got the 62 ready to go back on the trailer for its trip down to the DMV for title inspection, and I decided I should do some visual verifications of the running condition before driving it onto the trailer...

First step was to get some water into it and flush out the cooling system, so I popped off the thermostat housing, expecting that if there was a thermostat in there, it was probably jammed shut... and I wasn't surprised; so after popping the thermostat out and bolting the housing back up, I hooked up the battery, checked the engine dipstick, polarized the generator, and fired it up and shot some video of it, because I had not yet started it and watched for blue smoke when its cold. so I ran it for about a minute or so, revved it and did not see any smoke from the tailpipe at all.

Then I took the valve cover off to check the condition of the rockers - everything under the valve cover looks way cleaner than I was expecting, and everything was well oiled

Mechanically- the water pump is no good- its leaking from the weep hole, and the bearings are noisy, and you probably heard the starter solenoid clicking in the video. Nothing too outrageous- I'll drop the water pump at Will Kellog's place the next time I'm heading down to Mexico to go fishing, and I'll take a closer look at the starter after I get the Patrol's body broken down for paint and body work...

Tomorrow, I'll be at the motor vehicle dept for my inspection when they open at 8am...

Nice and sparklingly clean under that valve cover. No doubt in my mind that the mileage is original. The generator's yellow tag is still bright, another indication of the low mileage. This is a very worthy Patrol, it's nice to see it getting some talented love. :D
Beyond any hope for intervention

Here it is.... The best Patrol video I have made so far (all credit for the video quality goes to my highly skilled camera-person - watch for her brief, self directed cameo near the end 8-) )

That's going to be all for this Patrol for the next couple of weeks - I got my DMV inspection and title application done today, but it will take a couple weeks to get my title document, so until the paperwork comes, I'll let this one sit; while I turn my attention toward continuing to dismantle "65 #2" and maybe even get to work (finally) on the Brake MC conversion project for the Green Monster...

Not much new going on with my 62 softie - I was planning to begin tearing this one down for it's re-conditioning project, but I think I'm going to hold off until I have a few more of the parts I need tracked down and locked in, so while I do that I'm going to focus on the 65 hardtop project for awhile...

Oh, and one thing I did notice today- This Patrol has no provision on the frame for side steps, or a skid pan - the holes where the steps would bolt to the frame are not present, and neither are the brackets that hang off the frame for the skid pan...? I guess the side step and skid pan options came along after 1962...? any Ideas about that Gurus?

Arizona finally sent me my legal title, and a license plate for my 62 Patrol:
CAM00603.jpg
If it had working brakes, I'd be out throwing a battery in it and going for a joy ride...

But at least now the last preliminary step has been completed to get this Patrol's restoration project under way, except one....

... I've decided I'm going to rebuild my white 65 hard top Patrol first 8-)

Love the softy, I spotted a really nice looking front bumper on that Patrol. Can't wait to see what you do with this one.
