Re: Brake Master Cylinder or rebuild kit

Post by antiquecyles »

Hello everyone,

I wont use profanity (my mom may be reading) but I was able to obtain a Brake MAster Cylinder rebuild kit that is referenced as a compatible part. It was the one through Car Quest that works on 61-66 Ford E100's and wagons. I brought my parts with me to compare. Good thing, the rebuild kit wasn't the same. There were many differences so I passed on it.

The Raybestos MCK 32503 on another compatible parts list isn't available. in fact. Raybestos has no record of the number. Most of there Brake Master Cylinders start with "MK". Still no luck...

I will be going to NAPA tonight to buy the only UP387 rebuild kit in Southern Ca! It's the last one. It is the 3rd and final "compatible part" for the master cylinder rebuild kits referenced on this forum. (I am crossing my fingers, knocking on wood, meditating, kneeling toward mecca and laying in a bath with rosary beads)

GOOD NEWS: I used ebay to buy the rear wheel cylinders from a seller in Australia (4wd_products). Their ad says they fit '67 and later. River Patrol confirmed that all 60 models used the same so I bought 'em.
They are a good price (80 bucks a pair) but the shipping was over 60! I requested alternate (cheaper) shipping and they reduced it almost 50%! I paid 124 bucks, shipped!

All that said, if I were a man of better means I would have shipped my Master Cylinder to White Post in VA and paid the 220 plus 20 shipping to have it re-sleeved and made new. They give a lifetime warranty with it as well. My cheap side and the fact that I am ordering so many things/spending a small fortune, too impatient and suffer from ADHD make this option impossible right now.

Why am I having so much fun with all these problems? I think I have a fever...

The kit I have is from car quest. Not all of the parts matched up, but it has enough correct parts to rebuild my master cyl. The main thing is the rubber cup. Unless your master is pitted badly, you should be able to reuse most, if not all of the original hard parts. :D

Here is a side by side of the original parts, and the Car Quest kit. Note the difference in the length of the new piston. This is why you need to reuse the original piston. Everything else in the kit will work. antiquecycles, does the kit from NAPA look like these new parts? If so it will work. The original piston needs to be cleaned thourghly and the 6 small holes in the end must be cleaned out. A precision drill bit works great for this. Carefully take a small precision screwdriver and roll the new cup off the new piston, due the same with the old piston. Then carefully roll the new cup onto the old piston.

Now that deserves a big THANK YOU!

thank you for taking all that time to explain and post pics!

I thought the bushing was built "into" the piston. I haven't even seen the NAPA (UP387) kit since I haven't been able to get out that way. Once my wheel cylinders arrive from Australia I will pick it up and try to rebuild the master cylinder.

I truly appreciate this response,
Kris
