Well just finished lifting the Lotus7 onto the trolley with the new engine hoist !well it does work !!!

This will enable me to bring the gG60 half, possible all the way into the garage to work on. I will need to move my workshop into the middle. So still have quite a bit of work to do !!!

Got no actual work done on the P'trol but did suceed in clearing the shed out so I can work with half a G60 inside (Yeah ). This means the next step is to get the G60 with no clutch into the garage !! This will be fun (NOT).

Did get some work done on a Ptrol (The GU) put the 2" springs in the rear. Dont have time to finish the front ! next weekend !!!

chimpboy wrote:Good on you Steve. I did much the same thing today, although I also had to get some other (paid) work out of the way - I was a bit neglectful of it during the week!
I wondered where you found all the time last week to fully dismantle your G60 ?? now I know :D . I’m doing a report for a customer as we speak and have a 6:30am flight to Brisbane in the morning

chimpboy wrote:So I too now have a brand new engine crane in the garage and a fair bit of space cleared! I must say it's really good (for me) having you working on yours at roughly the same time and pace as me, gives me inspiration (and useful photos/tips).
Did you buy yours from Supercheap or what ??? I bought mine at Supercheap after the Mrs told me to as she was sick of hearing me whinge calling mates over or asking her to help and to buy it
Must admit you are also stirring me along as I fell like a slack arse if you get ahead of me

chimpboy wrote: With the GU... hmm, I started doing my lift on my GQ after buying new coils and springs (3" lift), then decided to pay my mechanic to do it! He did it cheap and welded up adjustable panhard rods for me at the same time. Definitely glad I did that. On the other hand, with the 60, I would really hate to get anyone else to work on it :)
I’m putting 2” longer springs in and using original shocks (Got the springs 2nd hand only a few months old for $100 on eby). I only want the extra clearance for light/ medium off road. Medium heavy is where the G60 will come in. This being the first time working on a 2.4t truck made me also think about buying a bigger trolley jack :? . With 2” I don’t need to worry about panhards and castor adjustment thank god. I was quite amazed as I jacked it up by the axle. Pulled the wheels off and once the stabilizer, shocks where undone the discs could touch the ground ! A lot of wheel travel there if you want to modify !! My biggest issue was getting the stabilizer back on. Lost some skin on my knuckles and need to get rid of this grease before tomorrow meetings.

Well last night I won a long range fuel tank on Ebay for a massive amount of $35 !!

All going well I will install this and try and retro fit the original tank in the left hand side space in front of the rear diff. If I cannot make it fit I will get a custom water tank made to go there instead. (Brother in Law is a Boilermaker)

SATURDAY 19TH AUGUST 2006
------------------------------------
Well got up this morning with a mission to remove that engine and keep within a arms reach of Chimpboy !! Starting to feel like a race which I know I will loose  . Have to try. :x

After doing some chores got home and had to take the battery from the GU Patrol as the Mrs car was flat due to someone leaving a door open??? Wasn’t me!

After much stuffing around got the G60 to start in gear on a slight uphill and idle up into the new workshop  (Old garage laundry). This time I was prepared in stopping switching the ignition off and not going through my scary moment last time.

Image

Unbolted all loose bolts, removed starter electrics etc. Hooked up the crane and before you know it was airborne. As the laundry was quite low, I had to reposition the rear rope to get the height to remove the chassis.

Removed all brake and fuel lines getting ready for front diff/ springs removal. Then took the mother in law to the airport etc, etc, etc.

Well late afternoon now and started to remove the front springs/ axle. Undid shocks, stabilizer, steering rod thingo to steering box. Undid both front/ back bolts on RHS spring, LHS spring front undone having issue with the rear. I have undone the nut, but cannot get the bolt to undo ????
Even got some long pipe on the spanner and ended up stripping the nut. ?

I’m thinking I might just angle grind the spring off tomorrow and then grind into the centre of the bolt. Then just keep grinding it away !!! Any other suggestions?

Just gave the chassis a quick degrease and will do a better one tomorrow as I hose the garden cause water restrictions here and cam only hose Wed/ Sun before 9am and after 4pm.

Steve

PS- Also might need some new rear engine mounts !!!

SUNDAY 20th AUGUST 2006
--------------------------------
Well today got started early and gave the chassis a wash. Focused on cleaning the inside of the chassis rails. Ended up finding a rag ? dirt and cateyes (a aussie weed that is basicly a 3 pronged thorn).

Went out and had breakfeast with friends and then went to Supercheap Auto :D Walked out poorer after buying a Gernie and engine paint. Was going to buy a 2.5hp compressor for $159 inc tools but sold out. Put name on list and will get sale price when next stock comes in

Got home and grinded the front spring off so I could get better access to the bolt. Then went to the local hardware and bought a new 4" grinder and 2mm cutting disc. Easily cut the bolt up between the support and bush. Then drilled out the bolt and knocked it out. One stuff up as I didnt realise where the chassis was and drilled a small hole in teh chassis. Will weld this up and grind back

You will note how bad my No 2 crossmember is and will cut this out and replace with Green patrol cross member. Also note the writing on the PTO, will need to get a better look as all I can make out is

Just went through and checked all my chassis, engine numbers, ADR compliance and vehicle idenification plate. I will be changing cross members not the chassis !!! Don't want to change it from original spec !

 Holy shit!

Look closely and you will find Salvador Dali's signature somewhere on that crossmember... it's probably worth millions!

Seriously are you sure that this chassis is better than the green one's? Because replacing that cross-member won't be easy; it might be less effort to clean up the other chassis and use it complete.
Jason,

Planning on cutting in the attached photo on both vehicles. This should ensure a acurate fit. Once I cut the damaged one will also line it up against the new one ! Will call a mate over who can weld really well !! Also place a few plates across the new welds for support !!!

MONDAY 21st AUGUST 2006
---------------------------------

Well just separated the gearbox from the bell housing :) Wasnt to bad just issues with limited space and a 2nd hoist would have been nice !!

Just looking at how to remove the bell houseing and I'm stumped :? Time to pul out the manual (I only read them when stuck  )

Cant wait to get rid of all this grease, that is the part I hate workin on cars  .

John,

You are right about the spline being different then my current clutch. Now need to pull out the new clutch and make sure it fits.

Jason,

Once I get old transfer on the hoist and clean it, I'll take some detailed measurements between an original and Marks gearboxes !!
