Choke cable, other cable?

Won't run? Engine, cooling system, fuel pump, carb, clutch, tranny, brakes, etc. The old messages from the NPCA 'Engine & Mechanical' category are here.

Choke cable, other cable?

Post by GARYSCC »

Hi, I'm making a lot of progress on my patrol. engine and engine compartment all painted, hardtop is installed, front grille is installed, hood is installed. I've noticed that there are two push/pull cables in the engine compartment - one has a white knob just to the left of the steering wheel. Another cable connects to a panel in the middle of the dash. I'm sure one of them is for the choke, but which one? And is the other one for heater temperature? or throttle? i appreciate your help. I sent my rochester carb to be rebuilt - and should receive it later this week.

To the left of the wheel-top is lights and the knob could have an L on it. Below that is the choke, with a C on it. Directly below the steering wheel is the accelerator hold down thingy McBob. To the right of the wheel and center dash is the Heater switch with an H.
It is all drawn out in a parts book....try the 73 parts book so nicely scanned by our buddy azsteve....I'm a visual person and when I see these exploded parts drawings everything is clear and I actually remember it too :!:
I think that is the normal set up for controls and please post us a dash shot to see if the PO did some custom "OMS" that is confusing the situation.

2nd throttle cable could have been to assist a PTO driven winch. Datsun offered a throttle cable that was dash knob mounted on some models. You pulled it out slowly and twisted to lock. Not safe in traffic but handy on long highway trips. I had a factory one on my 68 SPL 311 roadster.

But he said that both push/pull cables went in to the engine compartment; the throttle control cable for the PTO doesn't extend into the engine compartment. It sounds like the cable that comes from the of the dash is something that someone added for an unknown reason. It is not original.
Beyond any hope for intervention

Common for Aussie Patrols to have 2. Choke and hand throttle. Hand throttles that I have seen have been mounted to a small tab that hangs below the dash.
