Hey everyone! I just got my patrol last week and have been busy getting it up and running. I have hit a snag though, I have four timing notches on the crank pulley but I can't find out which one is 10 degrees BTDC. I have it set on the most advanced on at the moment and it runs good, but I don't want to overheat the motor if this is not the correct notch. Does anyone know which one to use? What are the others?

HondaGuy,  According to the tune up section of my manual the marks (facing the pulley) (left to right) are 0-5-10-15-20. Set 10 degs @ 450 rpm.  450 rpm is too slow for my engine so I idled it back up after checking the timing. Also don't forget to unhook your vacuum advance and plug the port while checking your timing. This is also a good time to use a vaccum guage (or your mouth) to see if the vacuum advance is working.  Keith

and confusion reigns supreme.. So I am standing on the bumper looking down at the four notches on the wall of the crank pully. Is the one furthest to my right zero degrees - and the one to furthest to my left 20 degrees - or the other way around??? If I time my engine at 10 degrees before tdc using my dial-in timing light and the mark furthest to my right as zero degrees (chalked etc), the engine seems to run quite well. I have left it that way for now but would like to know I was right. My manual does not even mention the marks.

If you are standing on the bumper looking down they are left to right 0-5-10-15-20 according to my manual. If yours runs best where you have it then leave it there. Some people set them by ear. As long as it is not too advanced it should be fine.   Keith

Thanks but how do you get 5 timing positions out of four marks?

oops!  I shouldn't have put 20 on there. They are 0-5-10-15.  Keith
