How do I convert from positive to negative ground?

Got rust? Seats, panels, doors, windows, etc. The old messages from the NPCA 'Body & Interior' category are here.

How do I convert from positive to negative ground?

Post by npca-patrolguy10 »

Hi, I have a positive ground 1966 Nissan Patrol. I would like to put a cd player and possible an amplifier under the seat, and would rather convert it from positive ground to negative ground instead of insulating it. I have seen conversions for old landcruisers from positive to negative ground, but have not found any for patrols. If you know how to do this please e-mail me or post it.

How do I convert from positive to negative ground?

I will look into it for you, as I am going to convert a couple g60's in july.   I think the only necessary items to rewire are starter, alternator (regulator) and reversal of the grounding straps. The rest should work as per normal, as it doesn't matter how you power your lights or fan etc.   I'm not 100% on the details, but I am researching it currently, and I shall have an answer for you as soon as I've seen a schematic.   Joe.

ive done this a few times on other cars, disconnect the smaller wire runnning to the generator , turn the battery round and hook it back up . run it for a few minuets ( to  reverse the polarity of the field ) then  plug the smaller wire back in ,run for a further few minuets. job done
So, I just bought this Patrol….

The process is very simple, and I once did it for my 65 Patrol. No need to purchase anything. You can read on the internet regarding general procedures for polarizing a generator. One link is http://bioengr.ag.utk.edu/Extension/Ext ... rator.html   The only thing that you will need to reverse the connection -besides the battery- is the amp meter in the instrument panel, because otherwise it will show the current flowing in the opposite direction. Nevertheless, no damage can be done to the amp meter. The rest of the instruments will work fine. I think that I also reversed the cables at the ignition coil.   So basically, 1. You reverse the battery connection. 2. Polarize the generator (see the article above). 3. Reverse the connection of the ignition coil.   There is no need to do anything with the starter motor. It will work fine. If you need further assistance, drop me a line: estebantobar@hotmail.com   Esteban
