Can’t down shift

Post by Stetaylor2061 »

Good evening everyone. I am having issues down shifting from 3rd to 2nd. Any ideas before I remove the transmission? I replaced the throw out bearing years ago, but it hasn’t been ran much. I also replaced the brass screws on the clutch fingers. Are they supposed to be riding on the throw out bearing? Thanks in advance.

I've seen that problem happen going from 1st to reverse. It was the pilot bushing. Perhaps that's your issue?

The issue happens at speed. I’m hoping that it isn’t the synchronizers. Do you know the clearances for the clutch finger adjustment bolts?

Could be synchros but that is usually more obvious on upshift. The service manual has troubleshooting and disassembly information. You can download it here: https://www.60patrol.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1670

Downshifting from 3rd to 2nd will point the the synchro rings initially. But as RiverPatrol points out, it will also affect going from 2nd to 3rd, but when shifting very rapidly.

There is no specification regarding the clearance between the adjusting bolts and the release bearing. The only specification is the distance from the flywheel surface to the top to the adjusting bolts at 2.5" (63mm to 64mm) Obviously, this is impossible to measure installed in the vehicle. The adjustment is done with all the components out!!

What I've done in the past is set all the screws at the same height, independently of whether you have the 2.5" or not.

Please note that the synchro rings will work also when shifting from 1st to 2nd.

Just checked input shaft and clutch disk, they spin freely when clutch pedal is pressed. It up shifts very smoothly.
