Have not been doing much of anything on the carb; been in the throes of assembling an engine for one of my Studebakers.

But I have ordered some 9mm OD x 1.5mm wall Borosilicate glass tubes off Amazon. These are slightly larger in OD than the original Hitachi glass tube, but in measuring the holes that the tube fits into, it should work, and the Fluorosilicone sealing washers I already have should work also. The next 'biggie' will be cutting to length and getting the ends square and smooth. The only way to buy it was to buy a quantity of 10 300mm tubes, so there is plenty to practice on!

I hate it when my screwups cause me delays and extra cost. :handgestures-thumbdown:

Esteban, the Jet diameter number is indeed a #135. And thank you for the kind words on this thread. But if the carb doesn't work right when I get it all back together, I'll have to rename it to 'How NOT to Rebuild a Hitachi VC42-4A Carburetor'. :D

Back on the VC42 rebuild. The only thing left to do before reassembly is to cut the new 9mm OD x 1.5mm wall Borosilicate glass tube to length to replace the original sight glass that I stupidly broke. Luckily, the 9mm OD glass tubing just BARELY fits into the lower hole in the carb body. Apparently the OD tolerances cannot be held too closely when making these tubes; this one is slightly oversize. Here is the tubing, came all the way from China packed in a Styrofoam box; this was the smallest amount that could be ordered, but the price was still pretty cheap:

In researching online, a diamond cut off wheel is supposed to cut the borosilicate glass. Purchased a Dremel diamond 1-1/2" diamond cut off wheel on eBay:

But this isn't something that you cut by holding the Dremel tool in your hand. Already knew that one way or another, this would have to be done using the lathe. As a "proof of concept", I removed the tool holder and tie wrapped :o the Dremel (well, it's not a Dremel but a knock-off Christmas present) to the cross slide:

First try was with the tube held in the three-jaw chuck but with the chuck stationary. It did cut, but was not happy with the cut. Second try was with the lathe running, but the tube was cracking and chipping. For the third try, slowed down the Dremel and used a water spray bottle to cool the tube and diamond wheel. This worked well, and made a nice square cut. Used some 220 grit sandpaper while the end was spinning in the lathe to smooth it up. Here is the end result:

Decided the "proof of concept" setup will work ok for making the actual sight glass. Will make two just in case! :D

Excellent job and by now you’ve mastered the process.

While the setup is still there maybe you should cut a couple more.

Thank you Esteban! I had gotten pretty good at cutting the glass tube, but the finishing of the ends took even more time to master. When the tube gets cut, when it breaks off it leaves a ridge on the inside diameter. Found out when I tried to use the disc to cut off the ridge, it caused chipping on the ID. So, finally settled on a method of using a block (in this case a 1/2"x3/4" metal keystock) with 180 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Take most of the ridge off with the 180 grit, then polish the OD edge, and roll up a piece of wet/dry and polish the ID. once this is done, the end is finished square using the keystock/sandpaper and water spray. What that is square, the OD and ID are polished again with water.

So, one end gets finished while the glass tube is long, then the length is marked and the tube is cut to length. The piece (.908" or slightly longer) is chucked back up and the other end finished. This is a critical point because chucking it up too tight causes a crack in the tube. Cracked at least three or four of them unfortunately. Got past this by cleaning the jaws really good with a toothbrush, plus not tightening it up quite as much. Not loose enough that it moves when finishing the end, but not so tight that the tube cracks - say a prayer and hold your mouth just right. :)

Here is a picture while cutting a correct length of tube off, and a pic of the four usable sight glasses. This is where I'm stopping. :D The slight frosting where the ID and OD is polished make the ends look rounded instead of square (guess that would be flat or perpendicular?), but they are good and flat. So, now the reassembly can proceed!!
