If it doesn't fit in the others but is 60 series related, post it up.

Distributor Conversion Bracket?

Post by FJ40alex »

Converting a 1966 US waterproof distributor to a new forklift version (as recommended by this forum), The mounting brackets are different. Where are folks sourcing a bracket that works with the new distributors? Any pictures or links appreciated.

I was preparing a guide on how to deal with this and got sidetracked. It's totally simple using the existing base of the waterproof distributor, but you have to shift the internal driving gear (for the distributor and oil pump) a notch. I will prepare the pictures and drawings.

Any mounting advice appreciate. New forklift distributor mounting point slightly beyond the limits of the existing bracket.

Excellent pictures that clearly show the problem when installing a standard distributor in place of the water protect.

The summary of what needs to be done is the following, that I will show with pictures down below:
1. Place the crankshaft in TDC
2. Take out the distributor base (water protect type)
3. Rotate the driving spindle (for the distributor and oil pump) one position (comes out to 36°)
4. Reinstall the distributor base.
5. Install the new distributor. You will have enough play now to secure it and adjust the timing.

Problem
When you try to install the standard distributor over the old base of the water protect distributor, there is not enough space in the base slot for the screw that secures the standard distributor

The following picture shows an overlay of the Standard Distributor over the Water Protect base (all USA market Patrols)

As you can see there's no space in the slot to place the bolt that secures the standard distributor. The solution is to rotate one position or tooth the driving spindle.
The spindle gear inside the base has 10 teeth. If rotated one notch, or 36 degrees (360/10) the new position allows the clamping bolt of the distributor to fall within the slot in the base, with plenty of degrees to advance or retard the timing, as can be seen in the following diagram:
04 Overlay of Distributor in Base after Rotating Spindle.jpg
When you take the distributor base out, the Driving Spindle will look like in the following picture. On the left is the Spindle in the normal position, on the right after rotating clockwise one tooth:
06 Spindle without base.jpg
NOTE:
When you take out the driving spindle out, you need to rotate the oil pump axle (see red circle in the diagram below) the same 36 degrees approximately, so the driving spindle will engage after you rotate it one notch or tooth. Don't worry, since if the oil pump axle is not in the right position, the driving spindle will not go all the way in.

The following diagram shows the exploded view of the standard distributor base, driving spindle and oil pump.

I may need to edit this posting for clarity. Also, the pictures showing the driving spindle might be rotated 180 degrees (that was a mistake that I made long ago and I had to rotate all the spark plug cables 180 degrees as well. Long story...)
